Voltmeter connection

2013 Adv 650, I purchased a Koso super slim voltmeter that will be mounted to the flat spot of the inner fairing next to the instruments. I need this because I run heated gear. Where is the best switched power source to tap with positaps on the new DL? I need something that wont have an intermittent load on it so as not to give me an inaccurate reading. Where are y'all hooking yours up at?

Voltmeter connection

Directly to the battery, the only place it will be accurate. Use a relay on a circuit that will switch it on with the key so it isn't on all the time, draining your battery. Not sure if eastern beaver or the like has a harness, but you could probably build one with the connectors they carry. I got my volt meter off fleabay, it plugs into cigarette plug. It's not real accurate due to other draw on the circuit, but gives me a good idea where my battery is

Search for a relay circuit schematic, study up and dive in! If you aren't confident, bring it to someone qualified.

I wanted to try and avoid that, I already have a power plug and heated gear harness connected to the battery. If I have to I will but I would rather find a switched hot someplace easily accessable.

I have my voltmeter powered by the Aux connector. Seems to work ok.

How about using the heated grip power plug that's above the radiator, and which Eastern Beaver make a lead? Or, the horn uses the same plug. I use this to provide the power to my chain oiler. What I don't know is how much of a voltage drop there is between the plug and the battery, but a quick check with a voltmeter would show you.

With the digital readout gauges you can get away with a power source in the fairing area. Once installed note the reading on it, then compare the actual battery voltage. Do this at idle and cruise rpm. You will then know how much voltage loss you are seeing at the gauge and can figure that into your reading. While exact voltage can be important for running heated gear and other accessories, one of the best things these gauges do is alert you to a change in normal voltage readings. That might indicate a problem in the charging system.

I installed it tonight, connected to the accessory wires, Idles at 13.7 under way 13.9. That seems to be the operational range of this bike regardless of load. Confirmed within .2 v across the battery.
