Heated Gear

I did search old posts but couldn't find exact confirmation. I seem to recall previous threads that suggest that you need to run heated gear off the outlet by the radiator and that the outlet up by the handlebar to the right doesn't have enough power. Or should heated gear be run directly from the battery?

Run it back to the battery for max heat output.

As long as the amp draw of what you want to hook up is no more than the stock heated grip circuit is fused for then you are good to go. I've ordered a service manual ( haven't received it yet ), so I can't answer the question but I'm sure others will chim in. Another thing to try, looking at the fuse block and checking with the owners manual, that likely has the values of the fuses.

The aux connector in the fairing is a low output connection made for charging GPS units, phones or the like. Don't use it for heated gear. That can blow the ignition fuse.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

The plug you are tlaking abotu is intended for heated grips.

I run heated gear directly from the battery. It is simple and easy and no risk of killing the battery unless you sit on your bike with the heated gear on and the bike off.

There is no good reason NOT to run heated gear right to the battery. There is zero chance of leaving it on while you are off the bike, since you are wearing it. In my opinion, this would be the only reason to even consider wiring anything to switched power.

Also, depending on your connection, the battery ends of the harness can be used for other stuff - SAE terminals like on Aerostich heated gear can be used to connect a Battery Tender, or an air compressor - stuff you can't or shouldn't run off the ignition.

Finally, every bit of heated gear I have ever seen directs the user to wire the harness to battery.

"Gear" in my mind connotes stuff you wear, but yes, I concur that grips should either have an auto off feature that works, or be wired via a relay, or to the grip connection in the harness.

If the OP meant heated grips. That's what the connector by the radiator is for, it is switched off by the ignition, so if you are old and forgetful like me, you will not run the battery down. I know my Oxfords are supposed to turn off by themselves anyway, but I trust the switched connector more.


The one under the R/H fairing is also switched off, but is meant for lower draw accessories like GPS, as greywolf and others have said.

Yes wire your heated gear, gloves, jacket, etc.., directly to the battery.
