Rear shock preload will not adjust

I had the "common" problem of the preload adjustment knob being stiff. so, I lubed it with WD40 now the knob is easier to turn but after about 20 to 30 turns in both directions the shock seems stuck at the 3rd adjustment line. Any advice would be appreciated.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

Thanks for the help.Would the problem still be an oil leak if the shock is stuck in the 3rd position and will not move from that mark? I will try dissassembly to see if it helps thanks.

Being low on oil will prevent the adjuster from getting all the way to the fifth line. Inability to go lower indicates something else is also a problem but that thread will cover all the workings of the adjuster.

Mine won't adjust either. Can it really be out of oil in 700 miles. It's a brand new 14' model. Don't know if it matters, but I tried the adjustment with a load in both panniers. Do I have to empty bike and have some lift up on the back to lessen pressure when I adjust? Heading out on a camping adventure and I wanted to stiffen it up for the load. Any advice?

Are you turning it the requisite 30 clicks? It takes a while.

Pretty sure I turned all the way both ways and did not see movement. I'll check again today. Maybe I brain farted something. 😳

What are you looking at to establish movement? There are 5 lines visible under the hydraulic adjuster when the knob is turned all the way right, most easily seen from the left side of the bike. The bike is under warranty so take it back if it isn't working.

I'm a dum dumb. Didn't turn it enough. Got to crank on that bugger for a while until it will turn no more. I see all five lines now. Left it there because of full load for trip. Was perfect.
