High Km 2009 DL650

I’m looking at buying my first V Strom, its a DL650 with 150,000 km on it. I think its a reasonable price but I’d like to hear what you all think its worth, the tires are near new as well as the battery, its been stored indoors and also has a new stator. It comes with both side bags and a top case. What are everyones thoughts? How long can I expect it to go? It has good maintenance and seems as though it was always kept up to date.

Hola, my 04 Wee has 99.8 miles. Runs fine. There are records of guys having many more miles with no major issues.

Hello and welcome.

IMHO, 150 kms is a pile of miles on just about any vehicle. That said, there are quite a few Stroms with that mileage and more. 150K kms over 10 years is normal for a car, but on a bike, it likely means that the bike did a lot of highway miles / kms. Which, according to general wisdom, is easier on a machine than the same (or less) mileage in the city. If it was a pizza delivery bike, move away carefully and quickly.

It is also fair to assume that if it has been on the road for 150K kms, then it runs well and reliably and could/ should go on for a while yet. If the bike was a problem, it would have been dumped many miles ago. The mileage is high, so the price should be pretty low. The bags and case are useful, but the value of add-ons at resale is modest at best, usually, so don't pay too much more for them.

I would imagine the price would be pretty low since low mileage bikes are plentiful, maybe a little less so with V Stroms. If you're planning on only riding 3 - 4,000 km a year it should be fine. I have 120,000 km (75K miles) on my '09 and it runs well. I keep up on maintenance, still on original battery and stator, no real problems, it gets ridden regularly, and I'm in the process of planning at least 1 multi day this year. It may be my imagination, but I've recently noticed it seems a bit down on power below 3800 RPM, it's hard to tell for sure. I'm planning to keep it for at least another 25K miles.

My second 2010 had 100k km when I bought it for $2400 - ran very well for two years and I sold it with 120,000 km for the same price.
Needed a stator but it was very well maintained by the original owner and actually ran better than the same model I had originally with half the km.

If maintenance records ae available I'd have no issues with high km tho 150k km is getting up there and you'd want to check the physical plant ( steering bearings, axle etc ). Good luck.

Thanks for everyones feedback so far, the bike is listed at $2500 by from which I gather people have paid might be a little high for the kms on it. Most of my riding will be done on Vancouver Island primarily to and from work with the occasional trip down island on the highway. The stator was recently replaced and it needs a new shift lever these are the only things that weren’t fixed before it was parked for the winter. Tires are near new.

If it is a long term Vancouver Island bike it has probably seen a lot of commuter mileage. To me the price is high considering the mileage on it. You can expect some repairs on a bike that old as things start to wear out and fail. Day after day in the Colwood crawl will thin out the clutch plates and wear the cable. If you are mechanically inclined there is much you can do yourself and repairs are cheap when you arn't paying $110 plus an hour. When was the last check done on the valves. That check is about $350 at a shop. While they are in there an air filter will add $50. When were the plugs last changed. How much life is left in the chain and sprockets. A lot depends on the last owner(s). If they kept up on basic maintenance or have let things go figuring they would sell it soon. The basics can add a thou to the price of the bike easily.

I'd be thinking more in the $1500(US) range for those miles. Even though the bike can go another hundred thou, re-sale values plunge dramatically around 80K miles & that one is at 93K.

In the just about 200000kms on my 1000, the hardest thing on the bike has been salt. If the bike you're considering is a winter bike, I'd not offer much for it. Maybe $2000 tops if it is in otherwise decent shape. Consider also that 650's are a dime a dozen. There are a LOT of them out there.

On the topic of clutches, my clutch plates are still within spec after a long life of commuting. I did, however, have to replace the clutch springs a couple of years ago. The springs themselves were not pricey, but then factor in a new gasket, and hell, you might as well do the water pump while in there, and things add up quick.

I'd imagine all the suspension bearings need attention.
