Gas mileage dropping

Hello! When I bought my 05 650 with 39k miles, it was getting consistent high 40's - 47 to 50 mpg, 52 best tank ever when I took it easy for a whole tank. Now, 3 years and 30k miles later, it runs as good as ever, but just in the last few months my mileage has been dropping off, now mid 40's, as low as 42. I tried to take a tank slowly and was rewarded with about 46-47. So overall that represents a 5 mph average decrease. Can't figure out why. Maybe my wrist had become heavier, but I don't really think so.

I did make some changes to the bike early on - pipe and K&N. They didn't help the mileage any, probably could use a re-mapping, but this decrease has been much more recent, 6 months or so. Any ideas?

Cooler weather can affect it that much. Also if you get a winter blend of fuel(Ethanol) it will do the same.

Every year I see my MPG drop about 10% in the Fall and early Spring when temps are in the 40'- 50's F. It looks like you have a 10% drop too.

of course there is the obvious maintenance possibilities.....
air filter, tire pressure, etc....

Assuming bike is running okay (ie on both cylinders, air in tires etc) then speed (actually airspeed) and temperature make the most measurable difference in fuel mileage. I have recorded and graphed the mileage on all three of my strom and seen thee same results. Riding at high speeds gets poor mileage and low speeds gets better mileage and mileage drops in colder temperatures (especially at or below freezing) and is best in warm Temps.


Here is a graph of the mileage on my 2015 showing mileage vs date up until last summer. You can clearly see it much higher overall in summer and much lower in winter. The short up and down spikes correspond to lower speed riding and higher speed riding. The blue line is the actual mileage, the yellow is an average of the last 5 fill ups. Not sure if this was in US gallons or Imperial so don't worry about the actual numbers.



The craziness at the right side of the graph represents a lot of higher speed stabbing on my trip to the Midwest USA last May.

I'm not near a computer so don't have the latest graph handy but the trends continue and the graphs from my 2006 and 2012 DL650's are similar.

Vee or V= DL1000 before 2014
Vee2 or V2 = DL1000 2015 to 2019
Vee3 or V3 = DL1050 2020 to?

My Stroms:
2006 DL650: 202,000 km 125,500 miles, Sold
2012 DL650 139,500+ km, 86,700+ miles. Sold
2015 DL1000 New July 2015 205,000+ km, 127,000+ miles.

This can help preventing from cars pulling out in front of you (SMIDSY)

You're getting about the same mileage I get with my '12 V. Actually, your mileage before the drop was about the same as my V. I get a solid 45 mpg with 42 being my worst and 57 (wind aided) my best.

Thanks fellas. KKORO, is that a 1000?

My maintenance stuff is up to date. That seasonal variation is quite dramatic Tom. I've seen a little of this before, but not to the same degree. I live in Tucson and don't ride below 40F (desert rat), so, I dunno. BTW, that's also some impressive data analysis!

I bought it this month 3 years ago. I need to be REALLY disciplined for a tank and see what I can coax out of it, just as a gauge. Then quit worrying I guess.
