Weirdest issues with Wee Strom?

Hi troopers!

I have an inquiry for you today. What is the weirdest issue that has come up with your wee?

I'm sure electrical problems would be the most unusual. Either way, let the forum know of your frustratingly fascinating issues 😀

My weird issue is that as the kms increase (112,650) my 05 650 it just keeps getting better and better. Fuels consumption has not altered after the first 6 months ownership and the suspension has finally loosened up to provide a compliant ride (aided by less, lighter fork oil and helper springs in place of the steel preload tubes).
The performance is completely adequate for my needs and the only issue was the headlight out problem fixed with relays and a home made harness.
Vstrom forum hints such as the fuel filter bypass mod have helped and 4 piston calipers cured the weak front brakes.
No stator problems, and on the 3rd battery and chain.
Only one valve shim changed with the clearance now stable and has not changed for the last 2 checks.
Handling was improved with a Hagon rear shock and with Metzeler Roadtec 01 tyres fitted it never fails to amaze me with how well these bikes handle. I only wish my racing bikes handled as well in the day.

Current Bikes
2005 DL 650 - 120,000km
1972 Suzuki T350 - about 105,000 miles (including 2 Castrol 6 Hour Races)
1982 Honda CX500EC - 261,500km
All owned from new

The weirdest thing about my 04 Wee is that it has had basically no issues in almost 100K miles.
Shock rebuild, replaced a fork seal, checked the valves once. Went a buncha places and got back with no trouble.
And, it's hardly a bike with no soul. It's like sunrise, I can depend on it.

The 650's don't have weird/annoying issues, that is purely a first generation 1000 thing.

I'd say that's true with my experiences so far! I got my 2011 last July and have had no complaints.

The weirdest thing I experienced with my Wee and my Vee was/is people saying "good looking bike."

I have mastered the response "thanks, that is very kind of you to say so, but it is incredibly functional."

" people saying "good looking bike."

Funny I've had sorta the opposite. I've been asked, "Can't you carry anything else on there?"
Alway wretched excess in moderation.

I have owned both a 2006 DL650 and my current 2011 DL650. Both bikes have the following two issues:
- When braking hard with the clutch pulled in, the bike tries to stall. Actually managed to get the 2006 to stall once, but usually the rpm just drop to about 1000 before slowly climbing back up. I have read the same problem description in a online advertisement from someone trying to sell their Wee.
- Lumpy engine braking. Coasting to a stop in gear, letting the engine slow the bike, at about 3000rpm the deceleration temporarily lets up for about a second before beginning again. Very annoying in stop and go traffic.

Both bikes were stock when these issues were noticeable.

If it had only happened with one Wee I would put it down to a problem bike, but it these issues occur on both bikes. I also don't think it is anything to do with how I ride, as I have forgotten how many bikes I have owned in 26 years of riding and none have behaved like this.

In this respect, the engine on my old 2008 DL1000 was smoother, more predictable and more pleasant to ride with. Overall though I prefer the 650 for my urban commuting, but it has left me constantly on the lookout for what a suitable replacement would be (CB500X? Versys?).

Mine does this too, but when it was new it didn't. The first 16K miles were fine, nice smooth engine braking, then all of a sudden the bike developed this strange problem. It drove me nuts, I had the dealer do every adjustment to the FI but could never really get back to the way it was. I find if I keep almost no play in the throttle cable it helps. Over the years and miles the issue seems better, more intermittent now.

Absolutely nothing! This alone is unusual for an Asian bike. Most of them have some sort of issue. I've read about the voltage regulator issue, the headlight switch issue, fuel filter, and clutch mechanism issues. I've experienced none of them on my 2007. I'd say "knock wood" but honestly, I don't worry about any of these issues. This is a great bike!
