Placed wet pants over the front of bike with the key on to recharge my phone and melted the headlight assembly! That cost me $300🙁 Took the time to replace the cig lighter charger with a double usb!

Yo, dude,accidents happen. I was washing my two BMW's when I had left the key on and turned the hose on one and it went snap. I turned to see what happened and the hose steam hit the other bike with the head light on and popped that too. Gratefully I had spares for both. PITA! Dang the bad luck!

Sorry to hear about that mishap. Wouldn't leaving the lights on long enough to charge the battery in a cell phone run the battery down far enough to make starting iffy? If you left the ignition on as well, does that have a damaging effect (other than the battery)? Many moons ago, when we had points (What are points?) you could burn them if you left the ignition on w/ the engine off for a long period of time. That might be why we had and now have the 'accessory' position on the ignition switch.

On my SV, I ended up putting a switch on the side of the headlight bucket so i could switch it off if the key was on for an extended time while stationary.

My plan for my V (next time I tear into the dash wiring) is to wire in power for the flasher circuit, an underseat USB outlet, and maybe the 12v dash socket to the parking light position on the ignition switch instead of the lights. (can't ever see using "parking lights" for anything. It would be handy to charge something while away from the bike, so that would allow the key to be absent.

I think we have all been there. I had propped up some 2x4s, not being mindful of their stability. They feel over and broke my windshield, %@!%@*^!

You could consider a more simple approach. I have SAE connector direct to the battery that come out under the left side of the seat. I have a toggle switch for it mounted to a through-hole in the plastic panel that runs along the bottom of the seat area. It is handy to reach with my left hand while riding. I use that SAE plug for my heated gear, my battery tender. And if I need to charge my phone or video camera I have a store-bought SAE to dual USB. It came with a 8 -10 inch cord so I can put my phone under the seat (locked) to charge while I'm in a restaurant etc. I see it as a trifecta without mucking up my wiring harness.
