2017+ Lighter cast wheels?

I'm considering an upgrade from my '07 DL650 to either a '16, or '18 DL1000, and evaluating the differences between the two. Would a '15 be better because you get the recall ECU?

Use will be adventure riding (I put the "crash" in crash bars), spirited sport riding, and occasional 2-up light touring with the missus. We're average size humans. I came up riding liter bikes, but do wonder whether the 1000 will be less capable off road than my '07 650 (DL1000 shock/race tech forks).

Just wondering the difference of 18+ "lighter cast wheels" means. Does that mean '16 wheels are stronger (XT excepted). Also, if you have thoughts on the choice, please share!

Thanks in advance,
