Ignition key problem

10 days ago I left for a multi-day trip. Gassed up at a nearby station. Went to leave and the key would not turn. Fiddled with it for 5 min. before it finally turned and started. Went back to the house to put some graphite oil in it. Once turned off it was stuck in the OFF position and wouldn't budge even after 30 min. spent trying.
Decided to pull the ignition switch(Not exactly easy). Once out and cylinder removed it was evident the lock plates were protruding in both directions preventing it turning. I flushed it out several times w/ WD-40 and still the same result. Took it to a locksmith and discovered that key was bottoming out to soon. The lock guy pounded on it some to create an indentation for the key and wala it works better than ever.
I didn't ask the locksmith at the time, but I think maybe just filing a very small amount off the tip of the key might have also worked. The switch was always a little finicky from day 1.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Had to shorten my trip by a day, but all went well.

Well a thread just showed up that dealt with some of this.

Slightly different problem though as lock plates(Wafers) weren't worn. It was some reason the key wasn't going far enough in. Once far enough in all the wafers lined up perfectly.

I had a similar problem on my 650 a few months ago. Turned the key around and it worked, put some powdered graphite when I got home. Never happened again and I didn't look for possible problems, just figured there was some dirt or something in there.

Sometimes plunging the key down helps when mine gets balky.
Nearly 100K miles and still working on an 04 Wee.

Yah, my 05 with 122K never had a problem. I think something was not quite right from the start with this one. Hope its solved for the duration.

Good Post

I have a 2018 VStrom 1000. So far, 4000K on it, garaged in dry Calgary

I haven't had the complete lock/ignition failure, but I find it sticky and difficult to use, even after lub, and ever since it had zero KM on it.
If it dies on me like yours, I will update this post

Bought mine(new) in mid May and almost at 15K now. It failed at 13K. Wish I'd tried the filing of a small amount on the spare key tip. I think that might have solved it, but won't know now. You could give that a go and only be out a key if it didn't work.

I had the same problem with the door lock on the drivers side of my Suzuki car, took it to a garage to have it replaced and the guy just sprayed lots of WD40 into it, and it cleared right up. Apparently crap on the key goes in when you insert it, and compacts at the end preventing the key from going in far enough.
