My Sargent Seat Update

I ordered a Sargent seat for my 2018 DL1000XT through their Thanksgiving Black Friday special, and once I received the seat I immediately found that it next to impossible to install and that once I did get it on the rear pins would not lock into the locking mechanism. I also told them that the stock practically falls into place as does the Sargent seat that I have on my 2007 Bandit 1250S, which has the pretty much the same mounting system and locking mechanism as my V-Strom does.

So Sargent emailed me a return shipping label I sent the seat back to them so that they could find out what was going on with it. About a week after they received the emailed me and said that they had taken it to a local dealer and it installed on a V-Strom they had there and that it fit on the bike with no problem and they were shipping the seat back to me to try out again.

So I called up Sargent and talked to the guy that test fitted the seat on the bike at their local dealer, and I asked him if the bike they tried it out on was a 2018, and he said he didn't know what year the bike was. So after getting the seat back the same problems with installing and the pins not locking into the locking mechanism were still there. So I contacted Sargent again this morning and explained to them that I was still experiencing the same problems, and they will be issuing me another return shipping label and credit me back the full amount of the seat.

The guy I talked to this morning at Sargent said that they have in the past run into situations like what I'm experiencing and they've never really figured out what was causing the fitment issues. So I now plan to do a ride in about 3 to 4 months over to Seth Lamm custom seats in Redding CA and have him rework and recover the stock seat, as I was very pleased with the way he reworked the seat on my 2013 FJR.

Here's a picture of the seats he did on my FJR, and I only had him rework the rider section and recover the back half to match, and I plan on having him do the same to my V-Strom seat.

Sorry to read the Sargent didn't work out for you. As usual Sargent is great about honoring their return policies.

For my part, I'm on my second Suzuki with a Sargent installed and both of them latched right up out of the box. The comfort factor compared to the stock seat is significant.

I'm bummed that the seat didn't fit properly, as I still put about 250 miles on it and loved how it felt. They suspect for whatever reason the most likely culprit for the seat being such a PITA to install and the pins not locking into the locking mechanism is the height of the four rubber supports on the bottom of the seat.

Seth Lamm does some awesome seat work, and it's a great 300-mile ride from my house in Yerington NV over to his shop in Redding CA, so I'll make an overnighter out of the ride like I did when I took my FJR over to him last year, and take a different route both ways. The seat he reworked on my FJR was the first seat I ever had reworked and was the first seat I've ever had that was perfect from the get-go with absolutely no break-in required, and it only got better from there.

So I'm really looking forward to having him rework the stock seat.

Received my Sargent Seat for my 2018 dl1000 Adv. a couple of days ago. My Seat fit fine, sorry you had bad luck with fitting yours. I have had Sargent Seats on 5 different Bikes so far good luck with all of them..

says it tougher than the standard one from what I'm reading, just wondering if anyone has any feedback on them, thanks.

I got one of those 2 months ago. First ride was a 500 mile day. Huge improvement over stock. It's a bit wider than stock, so my legs are pushed a bit farther apart to reach the ground on stops, but the extra width distributes the load better, so well worth it in terms of comfort. I rotated the bars back a few degrees to put me better into the "saddle". I recommend this seat. Every butt is different, so I'm sure others will offer different suggestions for aftermarket seats.

Thanks,the Sargent seat looks exactly like what I want, just wondered if this new tougher spec is much different than the standard one. I'll let you know what I think when I get it.

I had the exact same issue with the Corbin I put on my ZRX1100. I dont know the latching arrangement on your bike, but all I had to do is take the striker off the seat, install a 6mm X .020" washer on each of the 2 striker mounting studs, and reinstall the striker. Worked perfectly, still does.

I don't know about the differences between the standard and plus, other than the company info, but I figured for an extra $30 might as well go for it. Would have been extra 20 to get the color matched welt on the standard anyway.
