Bike keeps cutting out then won’t start

1st time it happened 2weeks ago was out for an hour in light rain made 2 stops then set off bike cut out without warning then wouldn’t start had to call recovery, 2nd time out in dry weather similar thing rode for half an hour made a couple of stops, would not start at all after stopping close to home so pushed it back, 3rd time yesterday started up on driveway ticked over fine, set off and cut out 50yards down the road, dash says check with an elevated temp reading any help appreciated

The check & elevated temp reading is only there to get your attention.

Putting the bike in dealer mode would be a good place to start and check your battery cables are good and tight while you have the seat off, they have a tendency to work loose on bikes.

When the bike won't start what actually happens, will it crank & not fire or is there no crank ?

Will the fuel pump prime or not. ?

Does this happen with the bike in neutral or only when in gear. ?

What is displayed in the gear position indicator when this happens. ?

Have you made any changes to the bike. ?

It sounds like with the CHEC on the display, either the side stand switch being activated or the emergency cutout switch is inter earthing / activating. The bike will not start with the CHEC displayed.

Bike does crank but won’t fire, it shows bike in neutral but when check display on dash shows no gear selection or neutral, only mod done since I bought bike 2 years ago was putting a scorpion slip on can, not sure about oil pump priming, it does initial checks on turning key fired up from cold

If there is a problem with the kill switch, the side stand switch, the ignition fuse or their associated wiring, a CHEC will be displayed and all the temperature bars will fill to call attention to the display. If you see a CHEC rather than a heat icon (image of a thermometer in water), the bike is not overheating.

If the kill switch or kick stand switch are activated or your ignition fuse is blown you will get the check and the temperature bars but the bike will not crank.

I would still like to know what symbol is showing where the gear position indicator is when this is happening.

You need to listen to the fuel tank when you turn the ignition on, each time you should hear the fuel pump run.

With a disconnected fuel pump, the bike will crank but not fire as expected but you do not get a check up on the dash.

With a blown fuel pump fuse the dash is blank and the motor will not crank.

That's true if it's in gear, but the motor will crank in neutral with the side stand down, so the side stand switch could be the issue.

If the stand switch is bad the bike will start when in neutral but stall every time a gear is selected.

The stand switch only plays a part if the bike thinks it's in gear that is why I asked what is displayed in the gear position.

I don't know what year is your bike. I've had '14 DL1000 and there was a recall for 3 wiring harness weak spots. One of them is "earth" cable that would loose tight contact with engine casing. If I can remember well it affected production year 2014 and 2015 (don't know about 2016). I did the recall on mine without having the problem. Other guys did have the problem just like yours.

2017 DL1000 White
2014 DL1000 Red (sold)
2012 DL650 White (sold)

It’s a 2015 it not on recall for the three wiring problems but is on recall for a new ecu which I didn’t know about until I took it to the dealer about those three wiring issues I read about, hoping this is what’s causing the problem but won’t know until it’s changed
