Battery Change Time

I went to change my battery because like all the others it failed after 4 years. Two screws and an impossible to decipher third attachment point. I broke that third attachment point before figuring out how to remove the battery hold down.

Anyone figured it out?

Hi Rick,
A little late to the party here....

My battery died and I had to do the same thing a week ago.
It took a bit of searching, but I found a video or another thread here that helped me.
I took lots of photos of mine to post up here and your thread gets them.

The first screw is obviously front and center:

The second one is hidden down low on left side, accessible from straight above. Get a flashlight down in there to see it.
The zip tie is pointing at it.

Then, take the battery cover and push back and a little down and it unclips.

Here's a link to a short clip.

Other pics. Pointing out the ABS motor fuse for my own future reference.

A couple zip ties made removing the battery simple.

For me though, it was difficult to follow. All the parts were too clean and shiny.

Yes was first teardown after I had bought it. Mine looks more like yours now.

4 years eh... I should probably start running some tests on mine over the next few months. I would hate for it to fail on a trip.

Is there consensus that we should simply change it out at some specified interval to avoid that scenario? Say every 3 years?

You never know how long they last. Also depends on if they are on a proper battery tender when the bike is not in use.

My Caddy battery finally gave up after 8 years. So I am not a proponent of just changing the battery. Once the bike becomes kind of finnicky starting, its time. Normally mine starts right away. My bike battery is the original, 2014 V2.

Re. Battery Change Time

I also installed a new battery in my 2014 DL1000 a month ago – just for peace of mind before a recent long trip. It was to replace the OEM battery that was in the bike since I bought the bike new in August 2014 (and after 30 515 km). It was not showing any signs of becoming “tired” though. I was just scared of a “sudden death” scenario somewhere out on the trip

Riding since 1995. Previously: Kawasaki KLE500, Suzuki GSX750F and Triumph Tiger 955i

Batteries are, well......batteries, so ya never know when one will poop out on ya. My OEM went bad in 2 years, the dumb on my part "cheap" replacement went bad in 6 months or I suspect was never right, so got me a YUASA and life was once again good.
