I have been shocked at the extra 'fees' to receive packages in Canada as well as from Canada to the US. My experience is rather dated so it may not be relevant today. Not practical for where you live but for some a friends address across the US border and a trip (vacation) to visit occasionally could work. My mom used to cross into the US for groceries because they were cheaper. I think if you stay so many hours you are allowed to bring a certain $ amount in merchandise. And of course some don't declare any new purchased stuff but you don't want to get caught.
Years ago I went from NB to ME spent 1 night and brought back 24 bottles of a favorite brew into NB. I didn't see a problem and when asked I told the Canadian customs about the beer. After some consultation I was told I needed to be out of Canada for 48 hours to bring the beer in. My choices were to leave the beer behind, go back to the US or pay tax on the beer. Choosing to pay, the price of the beer effectively doubled. Then they searched my vehicle thoroughly. Some days you can't win.
good luck and keep us posted on the outcome.
