Question Gear Position Sensor - Mechanical or '-' ?

Can anyone tell me whether the new DL1000's have a mechanical gear position sensor or one that calculates the gear position from wheel and engine RPM and shows a '-' when the clutch is pulled in ?

I have been told by one of the top GiPro gear position salesman that NONE of the Yamahas or Hondas have a mechanical sensor. So they all show the "-". Some Kawasaki's such as the ZX-10R or ZX-14 have a mechanical gear position sensor, but many other models do not, such as the Versys 1000 LT.

If you change the gearing on a bike which has the calculated sensor instead of a mechanical one, the gear reading may become inaccurate.

For this reason, and the fact that I prefer a sensor that shows the gear all of the time, I prefer a mechanical gear position sensor.

I don't know if this will answer your question but I have changed to a 16t front sprocket and my gear position still works as it should.

on 2016 it was a encoder mounted on gear shift cam. I imagine it is the same still. Applies to 650 too. I am not too good linking images so small image attached.
