I had my dash apart to install the H7 low beam light recently and now I see the top of the instrument cluster, the RPM and speed indicator display, is loose at the top. How is that attached, does it snap into something?
I am not referring to the frame part, that is attached and solid, this is the actual instrument part that fits inside the frame.
Well I took it apart and at the top of it is a purpose built hole for a bolt and screw, but the hole for it was covered up by a rubber sticker, like it was deliberately in there without a bolt to hold it in place.
Maybe the dash is supposed to float around in the housing? It just seems odd because I can push at the top of it and it moves 1/8th of an inch, and there is a gap around it where dirt and water can get inside, that doesn't seem right.
I fashioned a bolt to fit in the top and now it is rock solid. I suppose it will fall apart now on bumps or something.
Mine is exactly the same. I have it all stripped apart to add some wiring and was concerned that when pulling the whole instrument assembly out of the rubber grommet in the rear there is a lot of play and its held together only by the 2 lower bolts. I added a small zip tie at the top where you used a screw. But I left the tie loose with some play. It now helps pulling the instrument cluster out of the rubber grommet but its still rather loose.
I had the same problem and my dealer suggested the easy fix.
Put one or two rubber washers on the pin behind the clocks and then insert it back in on assembly. I tried that and used two rubber washers I got at hardware store. I bought those for bathroom shower hose and they worked perfectly. My clocks are now rock solid.
How is this a problem, were you experiencing dash readout issues?
Has any one reported dash failure from this movement?
I think the first report of dash failure will be one of the above....IMHO
It is designed to move, whether Suzuki saw it as a shock absorber of some kind for rough/off road or a form of vibration dampner.
I reckon if you run a poll you will find every V2 has this movement.
My dash has never failed but it was shaking badly. On 2nd year of owning the bike, it started to buzz on certain revs. After I've fixed it's been solid and silent.
The problem has to do with rubber grommet widening with age.
