V2 tools

Putting a set of tools together and I would like to know the size of the countershaft sprocket retaining nut on a V2 ?

Hi Rolex,
We just looked in our workshop manual and it doesn't give a size.
But it does say DON'T REUSE because it's a self locking nut.

So unless Greywolf knows or someone else maybe google it or you could take the cover off and have a look.

Hi Peter,
Looked on a on-line parts catalogue and it says 20mm for the engine sprocket nut. It is the same size as the V1 nut and also the DL650.

It makes sense for it to have the same size as the early 1000 and the 650 but I seam to remember the Wee was 32mm ?

I'm going down one T on the front and would like to have the tools ready to go when the nut and sprocket arrives.

Anything but 34mm will be good if I'm at home and if I'm at Rolex any size will be fine.

I think you are right about it being 32 mm. (Found a post by Greywolf confirming that size for the Wee.)
I don't know why the on-line parts catalogue says 20 mm for the nut on the V2, V1 and the Wee. Doesn't make any sense to me.
What is your though about lowering the gearing?

20mm is the thread size. 32mm or 1-1/4" is the tool size. The nut can and does get re-used.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Every bike I have owned for 35 years has had the gearing changed, until my Wee it was up on the front and/or down on the back, on my Wee I put a 14t on the front and I think it was the second best thing I did to that bike, it turned from a tractor to a spirited motorcycle.

I test rode a few V2's and thought the gearing was too high for slow work and was not required for highway running.

My first run up a expressway I was very happy with the bikes performance then I looked down to find I was in 4th, two gears to go, overkill to my way of thinking.

Lower gearing would be a blast in the twisties and workable in the city,
however it would be uncomfortable cruising on the freeway at 80 mph (indicated) for let's say 500 miles due to the increased vibration. The V2 does not have an overdrive like the V1 and I did lower the gearing on my V1 and liked it.
You might be very happy on the expressway in 4th, I've certainly done it but in short bursts only. Maybe, here in the western USA, we cruise at a higher speed than where you ride, if so it would be workable, IMHO.

I found with going down to a 14t on my wee I never found it uncomfortable, it was happy at 100mph (GPS)and above two up so I can't see the V2 being any less fun at those speeds.

I'm even thinking on the V2 I may add a tooth or two to rear too, time will tell.

The wee is over geared and I think the V2 is more so.

Dropping from a 15t to a 14t on my wee saved me fuel and I got a better top speed so this tells me my motor is not working as hard, the V2 will not stay in stock trim long enough to get fuel figures, IMHO the gears are to high for my ridding style.

If I were just going to use my Wee for running the twisties, I would go down a tooth in the front; for mainly interstate travel I would go up a tooth. So I guess it's a pretty good compromise at stock gearing. However, I feel the V2 would benefit from going down a tooth on the front sprocket. The slightly higher revs on the highway will hardly be noticeable and should give it a little more punch, with less downshifting around town.
