Question Repair price

Well I asked my mechanic to repair my bike and will need to split the engine and put it back together.will check all the inner component and will replace right and left bearing center shaft .
will check the valves and adjust if needed, and cylinder and rings.
may replace the gears if damaged.
How much money do you think it cost me just for labor?
I just could not let this bike goes to the salvage yard. has so many good and new stuff on it, and will beselling it after major overhaul. will make some one very happy for years to come.

I hate to appear to state the obvious, but didn't your mechanic quote you a labor cost when he told you what needed to be done? Splitting the case and replacing parts, and all the work that goes before and after, then doing the valve check, has got to be booked as at least a 10 hour job. What does your guy charge for labor?

It doesn't sound too outrageous for labor costs. For a dealer affiliated shop I'd expect anywhere between $90-$120/hr for labor, depending on location. You might see a better rate from an independent wrench, provided one could be found, but $110/hour seems like it's right in the ballpark.

I have to hand it to ya, you're a better man than me......would be in the salvage yard or up for sale as is were it mine. I have a feeling you're gonna be out around $2000 once the dust settles and that's not even for parts, and I'd be worried about the same mechanic working on it.....just sayin. Your bike isn't worth very much, just make sure you're not getting into money which is close to the value of the bike.

Take off the farkles and get some money out of it if you change your mind, no question parts would sell here no problem.

I'm with Big B.

Is there no replacement engine to be found? I can't believe there is non. If not, shop for an accident salvage bike locally, get what you need and scrap the rest or sell the valuable parts. Its probably still cheaper then repairing the current engine.

With just the same problems of engine failure in mind when Iamsmiling had his bike up for sale as a salvage, I grabbed it up. The replacement forks cost more than he charged me for the bike.
There are the occasional treasures to be found if you are up to it.
The poor thing is still in the garage waiting for another Easter Sunday to rise from the dead.

To fix the bike and then sell it on? That just seems foolhardy to me.

As a parts bike, it could return you $500.
If you parted it and sold the accessories - at least $1500.
Your repairs must cost $1100 to $1600 PLUS parts.

That is $3500 plus, not counting the original cost of purchase, for a bike sellable for maybe $2500.
Sorry, but I do not understand your logic. Take your AT for a ride and contemplate what is best for YOU.

Thank you all for input.
I have already decided to fix it . it costs me 120for license plate /year and additional 120 for insurance/year.the repair cost is estimated around 2000$ labor and parts .
so V strom will stay in my Garage for now , if shows the problems are fixed and no issue will keep for semi-dirt rides, will be sold may be next year.
So, 2014 VFR 800 , and then 2013 CB1100 will go for sale, soon.
