2012 DL1000 Airbox Backfire

Hi all,

I picked up a new to me 2012 DL1000 yesterday with just under 5000 miles on it. I've rode about 80 miles on the bike since yesterday and have noticed that occasionally there seems to be an airbox backfire of little "pffft", for lack of better words, along with a brief loss of power while increasing throttle after decelerating through 3,000 rpm in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. Other than that the bike runs like a top and pulls hard. Now, the previous owner said he hasn't been able to ride it much the past couple of seasons and that it has been sitting for a while. There was barely any gas in the tank when I picked it up, but could this be caused by bad fuel or other fluids? Or is it something more serious to worry about?

Thanks

These engines are known to have some hesitation in that rev range, so it may simply be that.

I would check to make sure that the two rubber boots that connect the airbox with the throttle body are secured tight. They get blown off sometimes and do cause rough running.

With the bike stored with an almost empty tank I would be concerned about corrosion (rust) inside the tank. Check to make sure this is not the case before you ride the bike any more. If all is clean, fine. If there is rust search here. There are multiple threads about this kind of problem and how to deal with it.

Good Luck and WELCOME to the forum!

If you add more information about your local etc. you will get better responses ;-)

Running too lean and it’s a well known first generation 1000 issue, you’re in the right forum section for all the discussions and threads for such. Checkout the sticky threads in this section, they are a wealth of knowledge.

Rubber boots have been known to blow off with airbox backfire as suggested above . That would be my first port of call.

They blow off for a reason, and it mostly comes down to the engine needing FUEL. Good chance the throttle bodies need adjusted as well, both of which I don't miss about my previous 1000's.
