2003 DL1000 bogging down around 3000 rpms

Hey everyone. I just picked up a 03 DL1000 that is bone stock except for a PCV. I have seen this is a common issue on these bikes and I downloaded the map from power commander, but it didn’t help. Does anyone out there have any custom maps that will eliminate this issue? Thanks in advance!

Perform a fuel pump flow test, odds are the internal filter is very well clogged.

Welcome.

Why was your bike for sale?? Because it probably run poorly. Read up here: https://www.stromtrooper.com/dl650-d...t-results.html

If the flow is low search for "fuel filter bypass; Stromtrooper" on Google

I agree. I did the filter bypass a couple of years ago and she is still running great. Mine was bogging down at 4500 rpm with zero power in 6th. (Dl 1000, 2009).

Yes there are some maps around, look at the Power Commander Stickey, keep in mind the 03 is different than say a V2 like my 06. Different computers. 3,000 rpm is below the torque curve. The engine pulls best above 7K. So, there isn't much power at that 3000 rpm you refer to.

If your fuel flow is in spec you can enrich the fuel map some, but it will only do so much. My bike shifts best above 4500 rpm, no need to lug it.

Make sure there are no vacuum leaks, throttle bodies are synced, test port caps seal good, TB boots tight, good air filter etc.

The engine likes rpm, it cruises best at 4,000 and above. On the interstate I run 4500 in 6th when I can, or run 5,000 in 5th so I can have good acceleration in fast traffic. I have 17/43 sprockets.

I guess the 03 is like my 06 above 4th gear. Suzuki uses the timing to limit power above 4th gear. I installed a Gman TRE to make the bike think it's in 4th all the time. It works, cut my shifting down. Runs much better on the highway now.

One thing I will add to all the above excellent advice (hey, has anyone mentioned your fuel filter is probably clogged?) is that last time I looked the map from the Power Commander website is pants-on-head stupid bass-ackwards. No idea how they arrived at some of the weird stuff in that one.

There's a map thread up top that has been chugging along for aeons. However, I don't have any specific advice as to which map makes the best starting point. But you do have to go pretty far back to find the early Vee stuff, so you might be best off to start from the beginning and skim through.

But wherever you get a map to try, make VERY VERY sure you are using a map compatible with our 2002-2003 Vees. There are some important differences between our early bikes and the later models.

My Power Commander failed a while back, so I've been running stock the last several years and just putting up with some quirks. Make sure you check those janky imitation connectors for corrosion and water entry.

My 06 had a 03 power commander map in it. The thing was rich everywhere. Probably why he sold it cheap, he paid a local dealer to install exhaust and PC. It was actually a 2bros map for a 2003. The guy said it was a custom map, some idiot dealer tech special indeed. I picked up 5 plus mpg just putting the old Big B map in. It actually ran okay if you didn't mind the gas fumes.
