I believe PR can have redeeming qualities, depending upon how they're used. We have some in Cedar Rapids that are on the highway. They're used in a particularly nasty set of S curves that go through town and have definitely had an impact on accident reduction through the curves.

I also agree with many statements that stoplights are not a good place for PR. But when used as a speeding deterrent on certain stretches of highway, they can be effective.

I think a main issue is what constitutes a "GOOD" place for a camera.

I suspect that cameras in and around Toronto will be placed where they can generate the greatest income from fines. Camera suppliers may get a share of the revenues, and they are very persuasive lobbists, who often guide jurisdictions to maximize revenue and disregard all other issues in placing the cameras. Safety??? What is that worth???

Toronto's police are very experienced at knowing where drivers tend to speed. Toronto has many hills, and some long straight [almost] accident-free downhill stretches where cameras will certainly be present ... IF they are permitted.

(What did Keith mean by "Bunnies"?) Wait.

I like Iowa's flag:

Post #2 is from a member in (actually near) Cedar Rapids. Say the city's name three times, and you will understand why people from it are called Bunnies. If people from Halifax are Haligonians, are people from Bad Axe Michigan perhaps Begonias? I asked a resident of BAMI about that, and she scowled. Never mind.

Hope so.
Trouble is, machines are more cost effective in some cases. Anytime it can be legislated, or incorporated, with profit to those who make the decisions, ...
