Newer member to this forum- I live in Etobicoke , Ontario near Eglinton/Royal York area. I have a 2008 V-Strom 1000 so far the best bike for me that I ever had. I tried to post something yesterday but cant find it now so it must be lost forever.

I'm changing my own oil and anti freeze to save money I checked out a lot of different oil brands and decided to use what the Suzuki engineers have recommended for their Suzuki bikes. You can buy one of their oil kits for $60 which includes amount needed 3 or 4 Quarts of Ecstar 10W40 Full Synthetic MA2 R9000 , a Filter , crush seal for oil drain plug. Saves a bit of money using the Kit.

After all my searches on forums and other sites no one has ever mentioned using this brand ECSTAR of oil but lots of riders mentioned using anything from regular truck oil , Diesel oil and a lot of very cheap brands that automobiles use. So now I'm wondering is there a reason other than price why no one is using Suzuki Ecstar Oil ? Forty years ago I was pulling wrenches for abt 10 yrs in the then NWT for off road construction machines/vehicles. It taught me how important engine oil is to all kinds of engines and I wouldn't use any engine oil not recommended for a specific vehicle. So can anyone tell me if their is a problem w/ using ECSTAR OIL in my V-Strom ?

2nd question : I get severe front tire wobble at 180 kms with a new tire on. Checked front end and bearings etc etc haven't checked the balancing or alignment .

I will thank you now for any advise you may have,

The only new advice I can give you is to check the next thread to be forever reunited with your earlier thread.

Do it quick before someone posts a different thread and creates a gap between these two threads making my advice forever null and void!!

Oil is a subjective topic, what works for one may not work for another. As long as the oil is JASO MA certified - JASO MA2 for bikes with catalytic converters, Japan's foray into having the oil identified as good for wet clutch operation - no friction modifiers. Look for oils that have an API donut that has the lower half blank - see attached. Check your owner's manual for the correct grade depending on the temperature, and the correct API designation. API designations are backwards compatible.

Shell Rotella T6 synthetic comes in a JASO certified variant as do others.

Once you find an oil that you feel good about stay with it. Sometimes takes a few tries to get to the oil you like.

Good luck. Cheers.

Hello Stillfree. I'm with you on manufacturer recommended oil. I've been using Ecstar semi-synthetic 10-40 in my 650 and will stick with it as well as genuine Suzuki oil filters. I also change filters each time, as opposed to changing oil only. It is the cheapest insurance I can buy. I'm aware there are probably finer products out there but Suzuki's oil recommendation is good enough for me. I'll probably switch to Ecstar full synthetic at some point. Best, DD

Your thread is here: https://www.stromtrooper.com/canadian-troopers/428289-new-forum-toronto-ontario.html

Regarding your handling problem:
Check your tyre pressures
Check that the new tyre is correctly mounted on the wheel.
Check that your steering head bearings are good, and correctly adjusted.
Sometimes, what appears to be a front end problem is actually from the rear. Check pressure and for unusual wear.
Here is another similar thread with suggestions. https://www.stromtrooper.com/dl1000-2002-2012/426837-amazed-difference-set-tires-makes.html

As all oil discussion is meant to be addressed here: https://www.stromtrooper.com/general-v-strom-discussion/24347-big-oil-thread-only-oil-thread.html and this is a duplicate post, and there are other threads on handling issues, I have closed this thread.

I'm sure that this forum will assist with your concerns, but please do a little research. :smile2:
