Calabogie Solstice Ride - June 25th

Date Change!
On Sunday July 16, I'm going to head out for a long ride up to Calabogie to enjoy the really long daylight. Planning on hitting up lots of the best roads northeast of Peterborough, including Northey's Bay, Lower Faraday, Elephant Lake, 508, 511, South Lavant, 509, and much more.

Start: Leaving Mississauga at 6am to beat any cottage traffic heading east. I'm open to meeting up along the way if anyone is interested to join.
Meeting Spot: Port Hope for 7:30am - https://goo.gl/maps/ysbvikK98tH2 - This is at the Tim Hortons and there is a Petro Canada gas station close by for fuel.
Finish: Port Perry Tim's for around 6pm. I expect to be back in Mississauga around 8pm after the westbound rush hour is over. It will be a long day, but I take a break every 2 hours or so.
Lunch: I'll pack a lunch & snacks and take breaks beside lakes & rivers or something nice and scenic, to save time from long sit down stops.
Pace: I ride responsible on the straights, respectful in small towns and fun in the corners. I ride a V-Strom 650. If you've ridden with me before, it's the same sort of deal.

This isn't a ride for new riders as there are a good number of twisty roads. This isn't a ride for hooligans as I want to keep my license. This will be a long day at a decent pace!

Route: https://goo.gl/maps/UL8kK9DGAAw - this is what I have in mind right now. Should be around 1000km give or take and only paved roads.

If anyone is interested, post up or PM.
Cheers!

I'm from Perth but now living in Thunder Bay. I grew up on those roads, and spent a week of vacation last week hitting all my old classics. They are all generally in pretty good shape right now. Be careful of OPP as they are lingering in the area pretty heavily these days due to the race track. Also be sure to hit up the Calabogie Brewing company for at least one... Pretty good beer.

Just looked at your route and it looks good. Too bad you can't somehow incorporate the portion of the 509 from Ompah to Sharbot lake... It is stellar! Maybe next time

I am very interested and should be able to let you know later in the week if I can go.

A side effect of some physiotherapy I am undergoing have made my right Glutus Maximus very sore and might mean I can't do an extended ride so if I do get there I might have to bail. (I have just changed some of the exercises hoping it gets better. Right now I am in severe pain after about 30 minutes of any kind of sitting, whether bike or car. )

Try 2 x 650 mg Acetaminiphen timed release ..that's an arthritis clinical dose and is safe twice a day. ( partner is a specialist in this area )

Makes a huge difference.

Well this is a timely post, because as I was putting together the route, I was debating on that very thing. I have done the 509 between Ompah and Hwy 7, but couldn't recall if it was better or worse than the section I have currently routed. So that said...

Which of the following two ways do you think is a more enjoyable ride heading east towards the 511?

a) https://goo.gl/maps/eqTUAhZpRa72 506/509 via Ompah
or
b) https://goo.gl/maps/tWbyvFYzxty Ardoch Rd/509

Either way, I definitely want to ride S Lavant Rd (#16) on my way to the 511.
Cheers!

To bad I can't go this weekend since I was in that area 10 days ago for 2 days and planning to go again next Friday for 3 days. If you have an hour extra and want to cool down a bit visit this place (if you never been there) Bonnechere Caves near Eganville. Great lesson of Earth history and geology.

Rick, that place looks interesting. I won't have time to stop since it is already a pretty long day for me, but if I ever stay overnight up near there then it would be a great place to visit.

Tom, if you can come, it is always good to ride with you. If it still hurts, then we shall ride together later I'm sure. Heal up.

Butt's better but not where it needs to be yet. Regardless, our whole sales department has been volunteered to an event at the dealership (I thought it was optional) so can't go regardless.

Hopefully next time.
