i think today will just be people close by that don't care about the cold. do they even close the roads to 4 wheel traffic on days like today?

Old thread revival.

I'm trying to get a crew of guys together to do the Friday 13th in July of 2018. Anyone been before and want to share some tips for someone who hasn't been yet?

Well, I have ridden to Port Dover, but not on Friday the 13th. If you go there any other day, the ambience will still be ambient, and the crowds will be sparse and the beer will still be cold and expensive. If you want to see lots of motorcycles, go ahead and join the circus.

Best of luck either way,
Keith

No doubt in my mind, but getting guys together from as far away as NS for "any other day" is unlikely.

I've been a bunch of times, but not for the last 10 years or so. I used to only go in the colder months (November to March) when it was guaranteed to be less busy. A few times we went down and it was hovering just below zero and snowing, with only a few hundred bikes and thong man still pulled in all buck naked. I think the warmest it's ever been when I've gone down is 8deg and there's never been more than 1000 bikes. I have seen footage and pictures of the summer events in more recent years, when there seems to be closer to 50k bikes there.

That said, if you are planning on going in July, be prepared for long lines in / out and large crowds. There are often OPP checkpoints on the few main roads in, presumably to keep any gangs or thugs out. Since you have buds coming from a long ways away, I would also suggest finding a place somewhat nearby to reduce the time getting in and out, and so you can get there early and find a decent spot to park your bikes. There will be all kinds of awesome bikes to look at, albeit mostly cruisers, customs, rat bikes and so on. It's actually a pretty small town, so the local bars and restaurants will fill up early or have long lines to get in. I would think there should be a lot of bikes there on Thursday and Saturday too as lots of people like yourselves come from outside the GTA, so if you had a nearby place to crash for the weekend you could see the event at different stages. Do quick side trips out to nearby Turkey Point, or Long Point, or take in some motorsports fun at the Cayuga track.

If you bring a good camera and a fair amount of patience you will have a great time!

Wow, 2018? You are thinking ahead on this one!

Everything suggested above is spot on.
Main thing to add might be that unless you enjoy long lines for beer, questionable food and loud rock music, to pack in your own lunch. It always seems more civilized to me to relax near the beach or on the pier and just people-watch while having a bite. Generally speaking, the local restaurants are just overwhelmed by the crowds making it a painful process to get almost anything. Maybe I just have less patience these days though.
If it is your first time in, then you might as well go in along Hwy 6. It is the main route into town from the N/E and also the busiest. If you arrive early, the traffic won’t be too bad and you will slowly crawl in with everyone and get to soak up the atmosphere. Otherwise your route is probably on the Cockshutt from Brantford which is marginally less busy, but is kind of like going in through the back door.

Other than that, just enjoy strolling around, bike and people-watching. Try to avert your eyes if you stumble across “Thong-man”. It is a bit of a laugh to see so many bikes collect for no other reason than bikes collect, on the 13th.

I'm heading in from London. My advice is to get there early (before 8:30 or even 8:00)
Enjoy the circus and get out by noon, 1ish.
I enjoy it, looking at the parade. It is always a good time, especially if the weather is good.
Ride safe!
