Labrador

Putting Labrador on my "must ride" list for next summer. End destination Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

I understand that they are working on the road to pave it. How is that going?...and what can I expect road-wise. Tips, etc very welcome.

Cheers

My hopes coincide with yours.

I try to keep at least half an eye on Newfoundland and Labrador, and I have not seen any rumours about paving the road to Goose Bay Happy Valley. I suspect they will build a gravel road to Cartwright first, because that may reduce or simplify ferry traffic.

In any case, please keep us aware of your plans to ride east of Morden MB in 2009. I have several appointments in Canada in 2009, and I would consider it an honour to ride with you, should the opportunity arise. At the very least I believe you would keep me from riding around and around Winnipeg looking for Dumpty's restaurant!

I like your maps of territory covered. Mine looks much the same, with twenty states added. In 2009, I plan to add three New England states and some midwestern states, but I am not sure just when or how.

Yesterday I saw 36000 miles show up on my odometer. I stand in awe of your distance ridden, and I hope to plod on to surpass it ... someday.

Keith

advrider.com has lots of information about Labrador. check Regional Forums, Canada.

There was an announcement I think that one of the levels of government was going to pave over the Trans-Lab, but that has not started yet. The road extension from Happy-Valley to Cartwright has been in progress for years ans is still not open. Over on advrider you can find pictures of the sign at the Happy-Valley end saying the job will be done in 2007, 2008, 2009, and probably 20010 by now Apparently they are working from both ends and there are some bridges still missing so it is not passable yet.

Meantime, you can take the Trans-Lab to Happy-Valley and the ferry around to Cartwright or Lewisport.

I spent a few weeks on the rock in Aug 07, and one night near Red Bay, in Labrador, but didn't have the time to do the Trans-Lab. I'm planning to get back there some day...

Thanks Keith, if you're ever anywhere near Southern Manitoba, let me know and the beer is on me...
