New VStrom Owner

Just purchased a new-for-me, 2004 DL1000 in Calgary this past Friday. My wife and I flew out to bring it home to Victoria.

Riding impressions so far have been very positive. Comfortable and very easy to ride with good power (my last ride was a ZX11 ... it had great power). Nonetheless, I had no trouble at all passing traffic and was contantly surprised as I always appeared to be going faster than I thought I was.

Mileage is low (13,000 kms), bike is blue, and came with Hepco Becker hardbags. Always travelled in the past with soft bags. Must admit that using the hard bags was a treat.

The trip was without incident, except for the shifting linkage coming undone and dangling below the bike. I was able to put everything together again without any problems.

So ... I do have a couple questions ...

1) are there other bits and pieces I need to check for coming loose
2) bike was set to idle at 1,200 RPM ... this seems high ... what should it be
3) are there any V-Strom owners in Victoria on this site that get together on occasion ... I would love to chat some time as I have a lot to learn about this bike

Congrats on the new ride.

Here are some answers:

1.) A good read. checklist

2.) Keep the idle between 1,000 and 1,200 or you risk a stalling condition when closing the throttle.

3.) There are a few other V-Strom owners in Victoria....but they are a rough lot and you should be wary, especially the one that goes by "We There Yet".

thank you for that ... the link you provided me is excellent. I did a lot of searching around before buying but didn't manage to find that one on my own.

I will be wary of the Victoria V-Strom crowd. Hope they'll be gentle with a newbie.

Hey wait, that's me. Who you calling rough Heavy? Come back here and I'll whack you with my Tilley hat. It's hard to be rough here in Lotus land.

Welcome to the board zxphil.

No way buddy, that's Tilley with a capital T. Chin strap and all.

zxphil, there are dozens of Stroms in this town, both Vee and Wee. Waaaay more than post here. (They're probably the smart ones) I don't know of any organized groups however.

Victoria Stroms

Looks like there may be a few VStroms that get together on occasion ... have sent my email address to IslandStrom and look forward to getting out and meeting them.

And yes, my chain is well oiled ...
