A Little Information for my Kid

My son is considering taking a job in Marathon ON with a company that is closing the Golden Giant mine near Hemlo. Any Troopers from around there?

I know the chances are small, but maybe some of you are familiar with the area and have some insight to the area, such as climate, stuff to do, housing cost and the such. He of course like riding his Wee-Strom, but will probably be leaving it here. He enjoys hunting, fishing and is looking forward to trying Curling at the Marathon club.

Thanks in advance!

Dusty

Marathon is kinda in the "middle of no where", but the outdoor life there is great. The nearest city would be Thunder Bay, a couple of hours to the West.

Hunting - check
Fishing - check

Does your boy like ice fishing? Nothing beats drinking hot wine from on top of the Coleman stove and frying up fish that was flopping on the ice not moments before.

Climate,

Winter - Cold, Snow
Summer - Bugs

He went to college in Helena Montana, and loved ice fishing. He has all the stuff, so he is good to go!

He brought home some Labatts Blue so I think he is getting into the right frame of mind.

Pretty cool for me reading a post about Marathon....I lived close to there but even deeper in the sticks in a town called Manitouwadge..played hockey in Marathon a couple times...used to be a stinky pulp town...I have no idea what those towns are like now since I left 40 years ago
I want to venture back some day maybe with my kids to see if any of my memories are right..lol

I have been in Marathon a couple of times in the last 2 years. Its a pleasant enough town, but I think it is slowing dying due to the closing of mines and a slow down in the pulp industry.

But again, if outdoor activities is your thing, and you are looking for a place to unwind for a year or two, it would be a great place to live.

Cheers
