Document Fees in Canada

Just getting a feel for what dealers across the country are charging (ripping off?) for documentation fees.

When I bought my K5 in Wpg, I paid zero, nada, zip. Unfortunatly, this dealer shut its doors recently as a result of Suzuki going to one super-dealer in the city. No idea if they are yet stocking bikes and what fee they might charge.

My pal is looking at possibly buying from BlackFoot in Calgary, I hear they have a fairly high fee.

Might consider GW in Calgary or Turples in Red Deer, depending on their fee, and of course the bike cost itself.

Cheers!

May I suggest that you just negotiate to a bottom line price?

Whatever the dealer wants to tack on.. good for them.. but if you only negotiate to the bottom line + taxes + license then whatever they play around with is their problem.

ps: I sell cars for a living and admin fee nonsense drives me crazy!

2006 DL650: 202,000 km 125,500 miles, Sold
2012 DL650 139,500+ km, 86,700+ miles. Sold
2015 DL1000 New July 2015 200,000+ km, 125,000 miles.

This can help preventing from cars pulling out in front of you (SMIDSY)

I hear ya, but its still the principal in my mind, paying several hundred dollars for what??

I have actually cancelled 2 car deals because of the doc fee.

At any rate, I am hoping for some input from around the country as to what dealers are rippin....I mean charging for the fee. My intention wasnt to get into a row about the fees existence.

Cheers

Doc fees

Blackfoot charges 250.00 for doc fees and that is a no dicker fee. It is BS as they can't or won't tell why they include it. While they have a resonable selection of bikes and are market priced, they are an arrogant lot.

What are documentation fees?

When I bought my 'strom it was $1000 off list and no extra fees. Taxes extra, of course. They even delivered it, no charge.

Near as I can tell, document fee's are a way of a dealership recouping some of the cost of employing a business manager (the guy that actually takes ur loot after the salesman has closed a deal). It is claimed to be used for checking liens, licensing arrangments, etc. Perhaps

I think it is pretty much standard amoungst all auto dealers, and there are some bike dealerships charging the fee as well. I have heard auto dealer fees ranging from 75.00 to as much as 600.00. You gotta wonder why the spread.

Perhaps VTom can shed more light on the subject, but again, my intention of this post was to determine what dealers might be charging, not why.

Cheers!

List on my k7 wee was $8999. I paid $8200 last spring with no fees. I suppose I may have been able to get the price lower, but no doubt would have run into fees by doing so. I also purchased a centrestand, engine guards, and topcase and rack at the same time. I got a great deal on the accessories and they were installed for no charge. Last week I bought the Suzuki side cases and racks.Total cost with tax was $760. The Suzuki list is $700 for the cases and $200 for the racks so I got a great deal from Belleville Lawn and Sport.

Dubious Fees

The Suzuki dealer around the corner from me in Brampton charges $425 for admin and the dealer in Newmarket charges $400 for admin. For the life of me I can not comprehend what task they perform that warrants these charges. On a recent business trip to Ohio I dropped into a dealer and enquired about the extra charges and was told that they have a docs fee of $50 and the Freight and PDI was one third of what the above two dealers charge. I asked him about admin fees and he said that if he charged what we are getting levied with they would be out of business in no time.
I have also noticed that when these dealers list a "sale" in the local rag or auto trader the tendency is for the admin, freight and PDI fees go up, I guess in order to recoupe some coin for the price reduction on the bike.

Sorry about the rant but this is the reason I prefer to buy used from an individual.

Cheers

The winning question is ...

What number do you want me to put on the cheque?

Thank you, please put that number on your business card. I will be back to you within two weeks.

The thing to negotiate is the bottom line, the total price of what goes out the door.

I went to three dealers. The first one saw I looked serious and handed me a card with his out-the-door price, including the phrase "out the door".

The second said, "Well,MSRP is $wxyz, and then there are some fees. How much do you want to pay?" I replied, "As little as possible to get the bike. What number do you want me to put on the check?" He repeated his question, in slightly different words, and WOULD NOT commit to a bottom line price.

Ditto the third dealer.

I went back to the first, negotiated a little for handguards and a centre-stand, and wrote the check. I have been back to that dealer for all my parts except two spark plugs. Oh, and the wood for my luggage rack; I got that at Home Depot (I think its' Homme De Pot in Canada, isn't it?).
