Sign of the future??

Stopped in at one of the 2 Suzuki dealers in Winnipeg yesterday. They informed me that they are closing their doors mid-Decemberish. Apparently Suzuki is setting up a "superstore" concept similar to what Honda is doing.
This superstore (which I think is ready to open) will carry cars, bikes, outboard motors, quads, etc).
He also told me that Suzuki didnt even advise him of this situation, he read about it in the local Wpg paper.
This small shop (Sergeant Suzuki) has been in business for quite some time and is run by a couple of older gentlemen who feel that they will not bother to make an attempt to compete with the new dealership, even if they are allowed to keep business with Suzuki. They have not yet been advised if their relationship with Suzuki will be pulled. They generally only carried one of each model at a time, maybe more of the C series and feel they wont be able to compete with a huge shop that would carry several of each model and in various colors, etc. Natch, that does make sense.
There is another small Suzuki shop on the east side of Winnipeg, I havnt spoken to them about this.
I guess this is the wave of the future for bike shops.
Have any other Canucks heard of such a fate in their area?.....

Cheers!

Future

Hi. Just thought I'd reply about the Suzuki superstores.I think they suck.London Ontario has one and I didn't feel like I was in abike dealership whenI visited.Would you want a car mechanic working on your bike?Prices are higher too due to less inventory and volumes.

There was word last year that Honda was going to do it in BC but have not seen a Super store yet. No big deal though as we have never in our life had our bikes serviced by a store and there is always the good old USA to get a deal for bikes. Suzuki's and Honda's loss I would imagine as their intent is to kill the little mom and pop stores who have built up their business for all those years.

My thinking is, and maybe i'm wrong, that the small centres that have a dealership would probably remain. In Canada you can be an awful long way away from a major centre with a superstore.

Cheers

Do you suppose the superstore concept will affect future sales? I'm thinking that if it's a big pain in the ass to get anything done on a Honda or Suzuki, people may just start to like the looks of the Kawi's. Just a thought.

I bought my new DL1000 at Inglis in London not the Superstore. They only deal in bikes and know what they are talking about. I asked them if they were going to lose the Suzuki brand because of superstores but they were not worried as they are one of Suzuki's largest volume stores.

In a reverse twist, a dealer was telling me that Honda was going to make their dealers sell only Honda products. The Honda dealer here sells a variety of makes and would probably tell Honda to take a hike if they told him to stop selling his other brands.

super size it

I say let Wal-Mart start selling bikes and see how thier superstores like the competition. I worked in the trade for well nigh on 25 years in Canada and the US in small mom'n pop's and big cycle centers and am now out of the business and kinda glad I am. I ride my own ride and turn my own wrenches and avoid the big stores like the plague. As far as I'm concerned the motorcycle industry is a pathetic joke and its own worst enemy. Its been fouled by commercialism and marketing and run by the bean counters and laptop jockeys. I ride a V-Strom because its a very competant motorcycle ( not perfect, but close) not some piece of costume jewlery to enhance someones "lifestyle".
