new bridge on the trans canada

this morning i topped up my tank , with plans of reaching my goal of the 500 klm tank over my weekend, i headed too field b.c. over the brand new bridge over the kicking horse river , hardly opening the throttle i made my way up the hyway on a mission to reach my goal , i then turned off to emerald lake and the natural bridge, the lodge there sells hambergers for 16 bucks , so i sat by the lake and ate my left over shake and bake lunch , anyway the ride there i only opened the throttle enough for the bike too run and i was allready on the speed limit , on the way home i came upon the new bridge , the first time in the west direction , its down hill and the bridge is a huge curve , after not opening my strom up the whole trip , i couldnt help myself , i held it full throttle onto the fresh bridge , as i exited the bridges expansion joint i looked at the speedo , right on 200 klmph , tommorow i plan too go slow too fairmont hot springs too achive my 500 k tank goal, hope to little bit of speeding doesnt wreck it

I live in Salmon Arm, BC. You're getting me all wound up to try a run for that new bridge. I think I know what I will be doing this weekend! Do you think 500km is really possible on the 1000? Im still breaking her in and getting 400k but I do run up and down the throttle too seat the rings.

Maybe we could try and do the same for a 1000? I got 700K out of my KLR 650 trying that so I bet the 1000 could do 500k on a test like that.

Can you do 80KMH in 6th gear? The 1000 doesn't even really like 110 in 6th. If feels happy at 120k and above. I bet just for testing purposes you could get even more. If I can get 700k on a KLR with 5 gears, you will probably top that. I did ride the KLR like a granny, but I just kept it smooth all the way as I was so curious how much one can squeeze out of one tank. One time I got 850k on a KLR but I shut the engine off on all the down hills:mrgreen: My little secret on the trails too. People always wonder why my bike does not run out of gas on the group trail runs.

6th

the wee does 5000 rpm in 6th at 110 klmph, and does fine going slower than that in 6th , but 6th is not an overdrive gear like it is in the 1000, my yamaha xt 550 and my honda xrl 650 were not allowed too coast with the engine shut off as they are dry sump engines and it wrecks the tranny , once on my xt i did coast down a realy long hill on pavement with the motor running , the hill was so long and my memory so short that i forgot i was in nutral , thinking i was in top gear i geared down for the up comeing corner , WHAM as i droped it into first gear at about 100klmph ,oops amazing nothing broke

100kmph and into first gear  got to love those Japanese trannies!
I still have not gotten 500k on one tank with my 1000. Too many open roads and too much urge to twist the throttle still. Was going to try it on the roaqd to Mica Dam last week but ended up doing going 200kmph for a lot of that stretch. Too nice a road to ride slow. Did you get your 500k on one tank?

i didnt

its not possible to go so far with out twisting on the gas , so i have given up my quest for now , today i tested the 6th gear lowest speed , the bike is smooth at as low as 65 klmph in 6th , my honda xrl chugged at the 80 k speed limit so i geared it down one tooth up front so i could go the speed limit smoothly ,my strom dosent start too chugg untill as low as 45 k in 6th

The trouble is we both live in BC and just too many fine roads to tempt our throttle hand. The 1000 really chugs in 6th at around 80 to 90k but it really likes 130k. At the moment, 130 is the sweet spot for 6th and still 110k of reserve just incase we need to outrun the RCMP!
