Hi All,

I am going for a ride somewhere on Sunday August the 19th. I'd like to leave early (7ish) and make a day of it.

I thought I would setup a separate thread about this ride. I don't have a final route setup but am thinking it might be nice to head west to do something different. I am open to change.

Here's one suggestion I received but since I don't know the roads I will have to work on a route. If you know the roads and want to figure out the routing please feel free.

"going up through Collingwood or the Beaver Valley, Owen Sound, Sauble Beach, then down the Lake Huron shore to Grand Bend. Three nice roads running across the Escarpment between Airport Road and Hwy 124 would include #17 running west out of Mansfield, River Road running west over to Horning's Mills, and #21 through Honeywood on the north side of the Pine River Valley. There's also the Pretty River Valley Road south of Collingwood and #40 running west through Walter's Falls towards Port Elgin. "

Worst case I would happily head out towards the east on a nice loop though all those fabulous roads out there.

By the way, since I am on vacation leaving on the Saturday and going overnight isn't out of the question if enough want to do it.

TJ: You'll probably want to get away from them after a week anyway!

Don't worry.. I am sure there will be lots more rides.

Having made the above suggestion, I'll now make one small revision. Running all the way down to Grand Bend would be too ambitious for a day ride. Probably Port Elgin or Kincardine would be more feasible as a southern terminus before turning east for home.

The biggest difference in going west is that you don't have the more remote twisties like 507, Elephant Lake Road, etc. and you are hitting small towns much more frequently. The ride is more about seeing places and certain views than about "sport" riding those more remote twisty roads in my opinion. Still, it can be nice for a change if you are getting too familiar with the east. The ride from Sauble Beach down to Port Elgin is fairly slow with lots of traffic on weekends in the towns but the Mirmachi Bay road is beautiful on a sunny day.

If going up to Owen Sound, rather than go directly across to Sauble Beach, you could go up the Peninsula on #1 through Wiarton and back down. There are some spots along there where there is a decent view of the Bay.

I'd be happy to set out a route to the west, then you could check the distance on the GPS to see how long it would take. We could just add or subtract loops from there. Otherwise, the route we did last Sunday is hard to beat for "sport" riding.

Throttlehound:

I think I'd like to see that countryside.. nice for a change!

Personally, I am going to see the eastern country a lot in the next few weeks. I love it but a change is nice!

You and Heavy have a good grasp on the area.. I don't, so feel free to setup a route.

C'mon down!

My fellow Canadians are always welcome to visit here in the Southern Tier. Olean is 1.5 hrs. south of Buffalo on state designated scenic highway 16. Very close to the Finger Lakes and Allegheny Park and Forest in western PA. The Chautauqua Institute is an hour and a half east of here. You can PM or Email me for details if you're ever in the mood for a little visit to the US.

Thanks for the offer!

I'd love to head down there but it's been pointed out that for many of us it will be a 2 hour ride on super-highways just to get to the border, and another hour or two after that to get to any nice roads.

I would love to head down there in the future but I think it will have to be an overnighter.

..Tom

Overniter

Know exactly what you mean. Its a long hump down the 400 whatever and the QEW to the border. Back when I was a pup I used to commute from Welland to Scarborough to attend trade school at Centennial College. It was a hellacious trip in the car (Lada) but always a blast on the bike (Seca 650). When I took the bike I was always early for class. There are some comfortable places to stay in Olean if you ever decide to make an overnight trip and my guest room is always available. If you're feeling a bit stressed and sore from the trip my wife, a Chiropractor, does take walk ins at her office two blocks from the house.

Cheers

I'd like to go on that ride but can't make it, I've already planned on visiting some friends up in Sudbury that weekend.

I need to talk all my friends into buying motorcycles.

I like that route but my one little suggestion would be take Beaver Valley and turn off and head westward down the backroads just before Thornbury, Hwy 26 on a weekend can be a real crawl. Collingwood to Owen Sound on Hwy 26 would be sheer torture for someone who suffers from road rage and cant-remain-behind-someones-bumper-itis (I have no idea who that would be).

Have a fun ride, post some pics.

I've already suggested we bypass that little part of heaven on 26.

Too bad you can't join us.

I was sad to have to miss the last one- I was all set to go until something came up at 10 pm the night before.

So... it looks as if this one might be a go for me. I'm up north on vacation all week this week returning next Saturday and if all looks good I'll be able to meet up with the crowd on Sunday morning. I'll try and check in for meeting place/time updates.

Sunday, 7:30 Am at the Tim Horton's in Nobleton!

So let's meet at Tim Horton's in Nobleton, and try and leave at 7:30 am. This is two blocks north of King Road on the east side of hwy 27.

Throttlehound set up a real nice route that could be up to about 600 km long. Depending on how the day goes we might cut it off a bit short. I have not been on most of the roads but Throttlehound and Heavy say there are some nice ones in there.. I gather mostly it is a relaxing scenic kind of run.

I might be interested in joining you guys if that's all right. But, I'm not a speed demon or offroad superstar -- I'm 50-something, after all. If you're into the touring bit and some fun curves and corners, and taking breaks for nice vistas, then I think I could fit in.

I did 700-800 km last Saturday with four others down to Chatham via Milton, Dundas, Paris and other towns and back. Was great run in which we did some photos and video.

I won't know myself until Tuesday or Wednesday anyway because of a potential motorcycle issue.

thanks

The general idea at the moment is to work our way up the Escarpment to the Beaver Valley, then over to Owen Sound and maybe on to Sauble Beach, then returning over to Collingwood and down the Escarpment. I think V-Tom will post the "final" route Friday night. If anyone would like join at the start or along the way, just post here with your plan. I will make a point of checking here late Friday night (10-10:30 pm) and we'll watch for you. I'll probably be bringing up the rear on my black C50 so don't let that throw you off. I had to sell my DL650 due to knee problems. :(

Interesting; one of my earliest bikes came from a close friend that lived in Mono Centre at the time, right along this route. '71 Kawasaki H1 500 2-stroke. Still one of my favourites. I helped him build a house that summer just up the road at 20 Sideroad and 2nd line.

If I go, I'll be at the corner of 10/24 and Hockley Rd around 08:00. Grey Wee, Suz cases, black riding gear. If I'm not there don't wait.

You're right - too many choices. In my opinion, the zig zag from Schomberg to Loretto offers some more scenic views of farmland than the 17th sideroad, but the 17th offers far more interesting curves (uphill, downhill, blind, sweepers, s-turns with both up and down). So it's whatever you are in the mood for at the time. I'm easy, I've done all these roads more times than I can remember (the 17th I've done end to end probably a couple hundred times).

Oooooooooooooo, that IS tough!!!! But I think I have a picture of my 2002 Volusia sitting on that same rock. :)

For sure!!!!

Don't you find it a little strange that this thread has 520+ views but there are only 4 of us confirmed for this ride to date? :-? Hmmmmmm.

Before I put my hand up, how long would it take to ride from downtown TO to Nobleton, via 400, I'm thinking?

Man, 7:30 as in A.M.! Mornings are not my friend.
I got you at about 45 minutes, from Yonge and Bloor.

Shorter than for me to come down from Barrie.

Go for it. It will be a good route. Certainly enough to make the early morning worth while.

Drifter and anyone else:

The Nobleton Tim's is on Hwy 27 on the east side. The entrance to the plaza is opposite Sheardown Dr. That's the second stoplight and about 2.5 blocks north of King Road. As the saying goes ..."You can't miss it".

If you want to meet me at 400 and Major Mackenzie, there is a Tim's at the southeast corner of Jane St. and Major Mac. You can meet me in the parking lot there at 7 am. Jane St. is the first street east of 400.

Let me know if you (or anyone else) want to meet or prefer to go direct to Nobleton. I will go direct to Nobleton unless I hear otherwise.

P.S. Don't look at the Tim Horton's web site map for directions. They are way off !!??
