Chain and Sprocket - DIY in Southern Ontario

I'm approaching 30k km, so I figure it's about time to start thinking about replacing my chain and front sprocket.

A number of questions:
  1. Any specific recommendations on where I should get the chain and sprocket?
  2. Any specific recommendation on which chain I should get?
  3. I'd like to change the chain and sprocket myself (with JGL's help). Any specific recommendation on which chain tool I should get and where I should get it?

I went through this not long ago on my 650. I've owned quite a few bikes but this was the first chain I've ever worn out. Here's a link to the thread I started on the subject....

If you have a compressor, I highly recommend using an impact wrench to remove the front sprocket nut. I paid $29 for mine and it worked great. Make sure you buy a new washer for the front sprocket nut. I keep a few on hand because they're cheap and if I ever want to change my gearing then I will have the washer. The stock sprockets are very good quality steel so I use them. The chain from Motoman was way cheaper than any other place I checked. The tool from Mike's XS worked great and was $100 cheaper than the DID tool for really the exact same thing. A dremel tool works great for grinding the pins down before you press them out with the tool. I ordered a spare rivet pin for the tool just in case....$6. Make sure to flare the pins on the link plate correctly and use a torque wrench on all fasteners.

Make sure the ends of your DID chain don't look like mine shown in the thread I linked to or you will need to cut links off each end. If you cut it to the correct length and then realize the other end is damaged the way mine were, then your chain will be too short. Go slow when putting the link plate on so that you do not pinch the x-rings. If you have any questions send me a PM and I have pictures of pressing the link plate on that shows each step.

If you don't have access to an impact wrench a large socket wrench provides plenty of leverage. Make sure you use Locktite when you put it back together.

If you have a 650 you might consider going to a 16 tooth sprocket to cut revs a bit on the highway, if you have a 1000 you might do the same to increase revs.
