Day trips out of Victoria

My wife and I are considering riding up the pacific coast of Washington state to Port Angeles, then taking the ferry over to Victoria and staying a couple of days. We've done that before in our car, but are now looking at doing it on my V-Strom 650. Assuming we're based in Victoria, what are some good day trips on Vancouver Island? Something we can leave after breakfast and be back by dinner? Or even an overnight stay somewhere else on the island, a day's ride from Victoria?

Check out the Horne Lake caves. My wife and I went spelunking there on our honeymoon about 5 years ago. That's a good day trip from Victoria.

Cathedral Grove is also a cool spot for a ride and walk. You can check out Englishman River Falls on the way, which is also a good spot to stretch the legs.

If you're in that area, you might as well cruise out to Tofino, too. (That would necessitate an overnighter.)

victoria to port renfrew is a good ride, lots too see ,its along the coast ,it can be done as a circle trip as well but the road does turn too gravel at port renfrew, but the road turns back to pavement at cowitchan lake , but victoria to prince renfrew and back is a good day trip in itself, you could stop and see the sooke pot holes[big pools in the river] ,and also the jordan river [popular spot for surfing] and port renfrew is a little fishing village, nice windey road with ocean views

As you've been here before, you probably are aware of what Victoria itself has to offer for tourists. There are some really nice in town rides you can do, such as starting at the Parliament Buildings and doing the waterfront route right around to Cordova Bay, or you could take a ride around Oak Bay and check out how the rich live. Sidney is a nice place to look around and West Saanich Road to Lands End is a nice way to get there.

As Chris said, a really good ride is Victoria to Port Renfrew, with a mandatory lunch at the Port Renfrew Hotel. Lots of twisties, nice scenery. And you get to see Sooke. Hard to keep you down on the farm once you've seen Sooke! Stop at Jordan River, sit on the logs and look out at the ocean while enjoying a burger from Shakeys. And on the way back to Victoria you can play "Dodge the Screaming Sportbikes". Another good, but longer ride is up-island towards Port Alberni. See the big old trees at Cathedral Grove, and do some shopping at Coombs. Chemainus is a nice town, famous for it's murals, and is a really easy ride from Victoria. It could even be a part of your Alberni Highway ride.

Lots of good rides here in Victoria and the South Island.

I assume you'll be coming over on the CoHo ferry, if so be aware they only have spots for 8 motorbikes so if you'll be traveling on a weekend it's a good idea to book ahead.
You didn't mention when you were planning on coming over and what you are hoping to see.

Great suggestions! Yeah, I'll be coming from Port Angeles into Victoria on the ferry, probably stay in a B&B or motel, not sure which. We stayed in a B&B (that's apparently not there anymore) back in '99 when we came last.

Also, thanks for alerting me about the ferry's limit of 8 motorcycle slots. I didn't know you could book a reservation; I thought it was first come, first served.

We'd either come during the third week of August (less likely) or right after Labor Day weekend in September (more likely). For you kanucks, Labor Day is the first Monday of September after the first full weekend of September, making it fall on Sept. 3rd this year. :-) So we'd probably be up there anytime from about Sept. 5 or 6 through the 12 or 13th, thereabouts (it's still undetermined). We'd have about 6 or 7 days total for the entire trip, maybe 8. I'd like to go in September after all the kiddies have gone back to school and the tourists are done with their vacationing.
