There have been a bunch of ways of doing expandable racks over the years. The simplest is unbolt, re-position, re-bolt. Other possibilities include slots (loosen, slide, tighten) and hinges. I like the idea behind the captured bolt (i.e., that it is always there, hard to loose).

As always open to suggestions and requests.

This is the plate by itself, now powder coated.

Here with expansion plates installed and deployed to 24". Multiple mounting holes could allow the minimum, 14 inches or expanded to 16, 18, 20, 22, or 24" wide. It looks really wide in the photos at 24", but it is not as wide as the panniers. or handlebars.

The 3/16" aluminum provides a very stiff, very stable platform.

My wife found out how much I am planning on charging for these and how much Givi and SW Motech charge for theirs. Let's just say the prices listed previously are going to be for a limited time only.

I need to get one more tool to add 1/16 radios edges to the slots and then I will list them for sale.

How is the plate attached to the factory rack?

I'll take one non expanding, and can I get it powder coated to match the factory rack?

That had not occurred to me. I'll see if I can find a match for the color of the rack.

re: mounting

It's bolted using the factory points at the front of the rack (just behind the seat). And bolted at the rear of the rack using a two plates that sandwich the stock rack at the most rear slot.

I'll make an installation video and post it before putting them up for sale.

For those that may have skipped the first part of this thread. This started as just a fun project to say thank you to the community. Racks at this price will be limited so when they go up for sale grab one.

Will the racks be only for 2017 and newer 650s or will a version for 2012-2016 650s be available as well?

Mark,

I would be happy to make some for the other bikes, but I don't have one on hand from which to take measurements. As the opportunity to get my calipers and mock ups on the the other models I'll make them available. But right now I only have 2014 Vee2 in my shop. I should have never sold my 2005 DL650. ... Or my 72 Norton Commando. But that's a different story.

Hey "thecrumb,"

Here you go. A one piece 18" rack. $45 + postage.

Those tiny little deminions in the picture are 18" wide, 11.375 tall at the centerline, and 9.875 tall where it necks down on the sides.

OK the first 18" wide rack is done with machining. A added a 45 degree chamfer to the slots to cut down on strap wear.

This one has been claimed and will be painted black. I have some aluminum paint chips coming to try and match the color of the rack.
