I don't know much about FB, what is the point of "liking" a commercial site - or, in fact, anyone?

It's all about exposure and getting your business name "out there" so that people think of you when they are looking for the products/services you offer. Think of it as the new wave of advertising. It's cheap in one way but very expensive with regard to time spent on managing your public image. Still not as expensive as a coke'd up advertising douche, but it also has global reach.

Thanks. I'm not sure I understand how that works but I'll believe you.

There's a lot of "buzz words" like "community engagement", "market interaction", "social networking" etc etc. "Excretum tauri omni confundit", my high school maths teacher used to say. It's all just new ways of keeping your business name closer to the front of your customers' minds that that of your competition. In short, marketing that reaches people where they live on social media (Facebook, Twitter etc).

That's not to say there isn't any downside, things can turn sour for a business faster than you can possibly imagine on social media if it's not managed actively and carefully. Not answering customer questions quickly, being even the tiniest bit rude (no matter how deserved it may be), not stomping on spam and scam posts left on your page in less than a nanosecond ... these can all bite you on the ass in a heartbeat. It's a volatile environment with potential long term consequences to split second decisions. Many big companies hire teams of people full time to manage their online presence while others contract specialist consultants to handle things.

So, I have bought products from this company, and enjoyed them. I, being a rider, and likely to have riding friends, and on FB, those friends are nationwide, and they have friends. So, if I like that company, all my FB friends, from 30 years of knocking around the planet, will see that. My rider friends, trusting my judgment, might click over and buy products from RR. Or might mention to someone they know, "Hey, Bill liked this company on FB, you might want to check them out".

Gave you a plug on Facebook, Rick. I "liked" your page and wrote a message to the world about your products and services. All of it true, of course.

Thanks everyone.

I have to admit that I'm not a natural Facebook type. It does seem to be a necessary thing in today's world. Fortunately my much better half is and will likely keep me out of trouble.
