Fork Rebuild Tools --SLC

Anyone in SLC have a set of fork rebuild tools? I am ready to swap oil and install a progressive spring on my '08 Wee front forks, and figure I might as well do the seals while I'm in there. Bonus points if you're willing to coach.

My 21-yo son is planning on rebuilding an old Honda CX in the next year or two, so he'll be along to learn. We do a lot of semi-blind reading a manual, leading the blind, as it were...

Forks are not as bad as you think. If done right no real special tools needed, but I'm sure a few people will say different. I'm in SLC, 9 th 9 th area.

one

my only special tools were

long hex to reach and remove capscrew in base of fork-to damper rod-use impact wrench to get it to bite when reinstalling

a pvc slip coupling with a thin longitudinal strip removed-to drive in new seal, and a piece of ABS to transfer hammer blows to the pvc

I never thought to look on Youtube to see what folks have done

Current Bike: 2007 ABS Wee, rebuilt forks with Cogent DDC, Elka rear shock, tapered roller steering stem bearings, fork brace, Admore top box lights, LED side-only turn indicator lights, Powerlet outlet, frame sliders, Givi windscreen, Givi top box.

Prior Bikes: 2003 EX250, 2007 DL650 (non-ABS)

Black Lab has/had a good tutorial.
I did my forks due to bent down tubes. Piece o' pie.

Are your seals leaking??? Did mine a couple times and didn't change the seals cause they were not leaking. Most seals leak because they get debris in them. You can usually clean em out with a piece of plastic from a soda bottle, or several different aftermarket seal tools-seal saver etc... Unless they are leaking most just replace fluid. You can change the springs then too. Most people go with straight rate springs though! Check Sonic Springs website for proper rate for you and your riding style. just my 2c!

How many miles on the bike? If it's still pretty fresh, you don't need to mess around with the seals, just jack the front of the bike up, unscrew the caps, pull out the spacer/washer and old springs, put in the new springs, check the air space and add oil if necessary, and put them back together.

If they're leaking, a Seal mate or a piece of film can buy you some time, but if it's been damaged there's a good chance it'll only reseal temporarily if at all.

If you decide to rebuild, I'll echo the others from this thread that a long hex and an electric impact driver are ideal to remove the bolt in the damper rod. Cheapest thing might be to cut the bend off an allen key. You can bodge a tool to seat the new seal, but after my second rebuild I bought a Motion Pro "ringer" 43mm fork seal driver.

Honda PN 51490-MCF-000 is a set of two seals and compatible with the strom, and is a lot cheaper than the Suzuki part. Steer clear from All Balls, they're garbage and not worth the trouble.

I have it on my crappy Kindle and had to look it up. Good info from a good guy.
There is some similarity in fork manufacture. The same applied to the forks on my /6 750 BMW.
Only difference is that back then BMW out a drain plug on the lower fork portion to make R&R of fluid easy.
Tricksy Germans don't make it so easy now. Neither does anyone else!

if you have factory (OEM) front springs are they not already progressive?

I swapped my progressives out for linear - mo-bettah

OK... yup, you got me--the Sonic Springs are what I am considering, so I guess I am moving FROM progressives. Here's the deal... the front end just dives on hard braking, low speeds or high. I want to do some back roads this year (Pony Express, Uintas, etc) and I'm just not confident about those forks. Nope, seals are just fine, so maybe I leave those. The oil has never been replaced--it's an '08, which I bought from the original owner in Park City Oct '15. It had 1500 miles on the clock, now it has 7200. Maybe moving to a heavier oil alone would cut it, but I'm not optimistic. People rave about those Sonic springs, and at $90 it seems like a good upgrade.

So I am hearing I should skip the seal change, change the oil, and consider the Sonic springs. That change I can do on my own--I hear you on the impact wrench. I've got a friend with an air wrench so I'll probable borrow his for the job.
