Default Vstrom 1000 running very rough

My 2008 Vstrom 1000 is running 'rough'

Idles irratically
Flat spot at 3-4k rpm
Kinda misfire about 3500prm
Huge vibrations and noise over 7000rpm
Back fires sometimes
Seems to use a lot of petrol too

Has has venom cans added by previous owner......
Any ideas? Driving Me mad........

Your symptoms fit a scenario where the PO replaced the stock exhaust and didn't re-map or add a Power Commander (PC) type of device to the fuel system. The lower backpressure of most "performance" exhausts would cause the bike to run VERY lean, and cause most of the problems you listed, if the fueling were not adjusted.

Did you get the stock exhaust with the bike? If so, mount it and see if that helps. If not, you can check for a Power Commander in 2 places:

There's a connector on the left side of the bike under the tank just behind the frame rail. It should have a plug inserted with a third wire leading to the PC. Most people put their PC device under the seat; it's the easy obvious place.

Been away so couldnt look at switching cans.....

Have arranged a dyno for saturday and maybe re map if needed...been told that Suzukis dont need Power comnanders as the ECU can easily be remaped....fingers crossed

You are correct, the ECU can be reflashed. I had this done to my Vee and it is now a much improved bike.

It runs almost as good as a wee....

Ok found someone who sorted most of the issues for me... Except 3-4k flat spot / mis fire remains.... I'm told that's the way it is.. Can only be solved by PC which will leave my fuel consumption very high..
I'm gonna try standard cans during week but really don't expect any change... And I do love the sound of the venoms
So it's either PC, new bike or somehow get used to it .. But I hate it.. Have any of ye guys just got on with it and learned tricks to avoid it.
I'm seriously considering going back to an IL4

DCSF,

My bike is a K3 model so I know your K8 has a more capable ECU on it but...

Installing a PCIII USB on my bike really helped the surging and stumbling that I was enduring in the 3-4k rpm range. If memory serves me correctly I only lost 1+/- MPG in fuel efficiency. The PCIII greatly increased my satisfaction with the bike.

I'm wondering though, do you know the maintenance history on the bike from the previous owner? Could it be that the bike needs a clean air filter, valve adjustment, throttle body balance and/or TPS adjustment in addition to the PCIII? I have been amazed at the difference a clean air filter makes to fuel economy, engine power and smoothness.

Just some thoughts. These bikes can be made to run in a very satisfying manner. Hope you get yours sorted out.

you have to buy a PC. I had major trouble in the 3-4 k range. PC fixed it instantly. very simple, and a must do.
