Yah, making the innards on the housings lighter has been an improvement on a lot of turn signals. Alunimum foil has been used too.
I got replacement indicators for the front after a crash and it's bulbs were 23 Watts for the signal and 5 watts for the running light filament. Haven't wired up the running ling portion but I may someday.
Conspicuity, you know.

Did you put a white LED bulb behind a red lens? LED's don't change colors the way incandescents do. Put a red LED bulb behind a red lens and it'll be way brighter than the same white bulb behind the red lens.

I used LED brake lights in my 02 and they works great, are brighter then stock. They were about $25/pr. Not sure if other years use clear tail lenses, but I'd assume they are all red.

My OEM headlight bulbs are set up with a modulator for greater visibility. Do you think those bulbs would work with a modulator???

I think you're off topic... Your headlights aren't 1157's, completely different animal, and modulators have many dedicated threads here. Search on modulators, look for LED compatibility in a modulator. This thread is about 1157 LED tail lights.

+1 my searches "muddy up the waters" also.

Someone that knows more then me should put together a "LED Conversion" how to sticky. I hate to volunteer someone else's time, but "come on man, take one for the team"!

See Post #6:
I put these (DDM Tuning: HID and LED Lighting) dual action CREE's in at the front and they are worth every penny. They are bright enough to stand out next to my Whelen TIR3 strobe lights!

Note: These are 1156 for the indicator not rear and break lights!
