Hi there I'm about to buy my first weestrom and have found two bikes close to me in my price range. Both bikes are 06's and even the same color with minor cosmetic blemishes. One bike is loaded and ready for adventure with 27,000 miles. The other has only 9,000 and is bone stock. Both bikes are the same price $4,200. So i guess I'm looking for opinions here, Are 27k to many miles on the wee or do all the farkles offset this? Or would you buy the bike with low miles and personalize the customization from the ground up? Thanks in advance for your answers and opinions.

Go for lower mileage and "customise" it yourself. Some peoples idea of customising might not match yours

you have to ask yourself if the farkles are the ones you would have bought.

On the other hand 27,xxx is still low mileage for an 06. Farkles can get
expensive, if it has a lot of what you want already on it I would go for the farkled one.

I just bought an '05 with 27k miles and quite a few farkles for just under $4k. The price seemed good for the bike alone, I wasn't even accounting for the add-ons, until I'd had it for a few days and thought "I wonder what these are worth..." and started looking up prices. With the suspension mods, crash bars, heated grips, top case and mounting plate, there's easily over $650 in mods already on the bike, not to mention the time saved with me not having to research, buy, and install them myself. That's worth more to me than lower miles, especially when 27k isn't all that much anyway.

The higher mileage bike is set up almost exactly like I would like it, built for adventure with suspension work, tall wind screen w madstad bracket, rock guard/skid plate, pelican case, highway pegs, after market seat, after market lights and electrical power points, etc etc. Plus its a little closer to home. You guys think 27k on the odo is no big deal for this bike huh?

Awesome farkles. Check the maintenance records.
The 9K will need tires soon, valve adjustment check, maybe plugs and filter and some other stuff (maybe even a new chain). Who knows what the has had done with it. At 27K, it's got plenty of miles on it -- check the records. If maintenance is up to date, consider the the latter. Enjoy. pmk |

Lots of sparkles
My Vee is getting close to that, never had any engine work. Runs and rides perfect, no leaks, burns no oil. I consider that low mileage. I have a Kawasaki KLR650 with more than that on it. Almost 40,000 I think. Set valves on time and it was preventative. Other than oil changes and wear items its never had nothing done to it. Leaks or burns no oil. Its old technology thumper and I have used and abused it. Ride it hard put it up wet. Everything from traveling interstate to single track to mud and sand. I would not hesitate to take of to Alaska or anywhere else on my KLR anytime (with new tires or course). If a KLR will handle it so will a V-Strom. If you want farkles get the farkled bike. If there is any particular ones you dont like or use sell them here on stromtrooper or ebay. Farkles tend to bring a decent penny. Then use the money for other farkles of your choice. |
