Do you find the LEDs a distraction, given how bright they are?

I got the hat clip today, I'll be installing it tonight, i'll to a write up some time this week if i can. if they prove to be too dim, I am suspect since my multimeter only hit about .5volts with the audio all the way up, i'm going to look at the pinout from the detector, I know it has a 12v output that runs the led on the smart cord, so I think I can get a resistor and drop it down to 3 volts or so which will drive the led's with voltage to spare.

Your LEDs are probably so bright because you are overdriving them. They will live a short life that way...
You can you this site to calculate the resistor that you need: LED calculator for single LEDs |

overdriven? on half a volt? I tried a LED I had laying around the other day and it would barely light at all on .5 volt. I used a stereo plug rather than a mono plug, but that shouldn't have made a difference. not sure what the problem is.

I cannot get the leds to work off of audio output. I tried it with an ipod as well and it just wont work. I suspect the voltage just isnt enough. Tomorrow i am going to pin out off the rg11 jack going into power the thing, throw in a resistor and power the led's

LEDs typically need at least 2VDC to turn on. Check the forward voltage spec of your LED. I would be surprised that the audio signal from an iPod or radar detector could reliable turn on an LED without some additional driver circuit (comparator feeding a MOSFET or such).

I have came to the same conclusion, not sure how the original poster pulled it off... I couldn't get it to light a single lower power led I had laying alone.

so I stripped a phone cord so i'd have all 4 wires, and tried things out. turns out the circuit that drives the smart cord is closed all the time, and is opened when the detector is alerting... I wired up a led strip and was left with lights that were on all of the time, and blink when the detector is tripped..... which is definately not what I want. I'm running out of ideas, short of a normally closed relay wired on one side, and the led to another power source I don't know how to get around this.

What is the voltage that comes out to power your LED? If it is in the 5V range and you have 5V power, this could be a solution (see link). Sorry for my basic question, but I don't know your electronics background and I am not certain on how the radar detector is set up.
See: SN7404NE4 Texas Instruments | Mouser Basically, the chip turns a HIGH signal to a LOW (actually is can do six) and a LOW to a HIGH. BTW, it you are using more than one LED don't wire them in parallel; they wont last. Use one of the six inverters on the chip above for each LED. Last edited by Voltar; 01-05-2013 at 10:17 AM. |

actually there are 2 outputs on the detector, one is 5v the other is 12v, the 5 appears to be on all the time, whereas the 12v is hot when the thing is not alearting, and is off when it is alerting.
