How are you liking your Shinko 705's?

I know there are threads out there already, but I just wanted to get recent impressions of guys running 705's on the Wee. Mine are arriving today, and I'm really looking forward to riding them on a combo of dirt/pavement. What kind of mileage are you getting out of them? How do you like them on dirt? Paved twisties? What pressures are you running? Other thoughts?
Happy Riding!

I installed my Shinko 705's about 3,000 miles ago.
The tread looks like the day I put 'em on the bike.
Funny thing is...I haven't been in the dirt with them yet, all pavement, with many miles in mountain sweepers and twisties.
I keep 36 psi in front and back.
I highly reccomend these tires as the are a great value.
I paid $128.00 delivered

Well...not to be an ass, but some of those other threads contain peoples recent impressions of them. Especially here: THE Tire Thread.

Mine fell apart at 5k miles. So did another local riders. And a few other peoples. Great in the wet, okay on gravel (no real impression, as I only had them on soaked fist-size gravel / pea-gravel mix).

Mine latched onto tar-snakes pretty hard, and any irregularities in the road. Otherwise, fine on paved roads unless you like scraping pegs. They get pretty rough when hard over. But they're not made for that type of riding.

Was running the recommended 36/36 front and rear. Don't do any less! You may even want them a little higher then that, especially if loaded up. My problems came when I started adding weight. Empty Jesse cases and a not-fat but not-featherweight wife on the back and things went downhill from there...quickly. Exhibit 1. Exhibit 2.

I hope you got the new radial ones. If not, you're f'ed. I'm mailing my tires back to Shinko this weekend.

Mine just arrived! I'm excited about these tires.Time will tell, though. I'll certainly report my experience with them. Besides, I know I've been getting hosed paying $125-$150 for a single tire. You'll not convince me that a motorcycle tire has to cost this much to be good. I give Shinko a lot of credit for offering this tire at this price point. I'm tired of paying a dime for a nickel!

I'm a convert to Shinko 705's.

I am on my second rear. My first went 7,000 miles, which is more than the Tourance and OEM Trailwings I've also run. I am hell on tires. When other guys claim 10,000 miles on a certain tire, I get 4,000 miles on it.

The front, which was put on at the same time as the first Shinko rear 7,000 miles ago, still looks new.

I ride a 650, and weigh 210 pounds nekkid. I often do two up with my girlfriend, who weighs an undisclosed amount. I run 41 psi rear, 35 psi front.

I have had no problems with delamination or disfigurement of the carcass.

The tire is very good on pavement, gravel, and hard pack dirt. It is as good as any other 90/10 tire in mud, which is to say, not good at all.

I plan on continuing to run the 705. It would be a good deal at twice as much, IMO. Hopefully Mr Shinko isn't reading this last part.

Damn near verbatim for what my reply was gonna Bee

+1 :fineprint: I have just about the same exact situation [ and outlook ] on the 705's these are the best kept secret in the Motorcycle world... Great Tires!!

Where are y'all getting them?

I didn't see any 150 tubeless Shinkos in stock anywhere when I ordered my last Tourance.

I only get between 6-7,000 miles out of a rear Tourance before the wear bars start showing. At $150+ for a rear that's starting to add up.

Nice to hear guys!!! I ordered mine from Chaparral Motorsports. Got two rears and one front for $168 to my door. Awesome! They're going on the bike Saturday (just two, not all three :bom_laugh4:)

There seems to be conflicting info here. Over inflate, use as directed etc.

Mine on the rear was no problemo as in enumclaw's case until I hit the 6K mark. I still have one to two thousand miles of tread left but it now looks like a slowly exploding grenade.:yikes: I will try the new radial on the rear as I like the tread pattern for the type of riding I do and the price is so good, but if the new tires do the same thing I will be looking elsewhere for tires.:fineprint: Oh, and they do rumble between 40-50 mph.

I have just over 5k on mine with no problems at all. I took them off a week and a half ago to put an Anakee on the front and a Battlewing on the rear, only because I was leaving on a 5k + trip the next day (I'm 2/3rds through that now). They will go back on, and I will use them up quite happily. The front still has a ton of tread, and the rear looks fine. At this point, I would easily buy them again.

I put a set on my DL650 a little over 5,000 miles ago, just before the Eastern Rendezvous. I scouted and lead a couple rides at that rally which consisted of mostly coarsely paved twisties and gravel back roads. Then earlier this month I spent a week goofing off on the same kind of roads in WVa making my way up to the BYOB rally in Pa and back again.

I have no complains about performance or stories of delamination..... but the rear tire is toast at 5k and the front, although not worn out is cupping somewhat.

Previously I have always run Tourances on this bike and the front will also cup on it....but...the cupped Shinko does not create the same annoying decel-wobble that the Tourance does, but it does make more road noise, even when new.

Now I ride a lot of coarse abrasive surfaces and only get between 7 and 8k out of a rear Tourance, so 5k from a tire 1/3 the price aint bad in my book.

I'm currently prepping for a 6k plus trip begining mid July so I'm putting another Tourance on the rear and am trying an "untested" Annakee2 up front after reading that it doesn't do that annoying decel-wobble that the Tourance does...hopefully it will last the trip.

I'm hoping to try a set of the radial Shinkos this fall.....

I've run Tourances and ME880's on my Wee and so far have had pretty good results from the 705's. When I was riding for fun (twisties, dirt, gravel) the Tourances were really good. Pricey and I had very bad decel wobbles when the front would get worn but were very good tires.

I'm now mainly commuting and take a few dirt road rides every now and then and the 705's are behaving well. They can be a little squirley on the gravel but seem to be a good tire for the money, time will tell if they fall aprt like some here have had.

Well, after two good rears and a good front in the 705 (all the old bias ply), I finally met the time bomb with my radial front. Mind you, my records say I have put 10 grand on it, but the tread is hardly worn, so maybe I missed logging the last change...anyway, not worn, but very cracked. Then I lost a lug on the superslab. Sounded just like a flat as it must have hung on and slapped my fender silly before leaving.

Think I'm done. Gonna try some Anakee 2s.

About 2,500 miles on my radial 705's, they were installed for $210. Couldn't beat price. Took a little getting used to. I have been very pleased with handling, mostly paved twisties, some straight and a little gravel, alittle snow and a little rain. running 33/36 mostly till I noticed two days ago the rear at 50% gone while the front looks near new. I'll probably replace rear with same when time comes and then try something else when that set goes..

I can rave about the price, but not the wear

Did you consider sending those photos and the also the batch number from the sidewall to Shinko and see if they have any feedback for you? I do not think that they expect that as standard performance from the product, and the more feedback they get... the better chance that they will look into the manufacturing process and attempt to overcome this.
Thank the Lord that your tire did not put you down. I'll pray for you.

I also do have a brand new set of radial 705 tires setting in my garage. I likely will not be installing for about a month, leaving for Crested Butte and Ouray this Saturday and leaving the Strom in the Garage! This is a KLR and KLX 14 day period. Yea, I am trailering! 6 bikes and my Rhino behind my Excursion.

Yes, I have considered that. In fact, before I saw that I had 10K on them I was livid and ready to demand satisfaction. I think 10K is decent life, so I won't be asking for a refund, but I will get the pictures to Shinko when I figure out who to send them to. I just let the shop keep the old one too, since I wasn't going to ask for $. Should have got the numbers off of it. :headbang:

Man, enjoy the alpine ride, I envy you!!!

4000km on my radials, about 50/50 dirt and sealed, mostly 60-80km/h on narrow country roads but also 400km of 120km/h freeway. The rear hasn't squared off but is approx. 60% worn, front is still 90%. Neither have any cracks or other nasties as yet but I'm keeping an eye on them. Some low speed vibration, bit of hum above 40km/h but no wobble at any speed. Handling is fine but it is hard to keep a constant line on fast sweepers as they want to keep dropping in and counter-steering is required. Dirt and gravel road handling is excellent, they bite well in gravel and light surface mud, braking is good and power slides etc are very controllable. I like them, but like every other bike item, they aren't cheap over here; around $400 a pair.

I think this is my first and last set of 705. They tend to slip out in thick gravel and moderate mud, firstly very uncomfortable than I sort got use to it, but still do not like it. The rear one demonstrates unusually fast wear rate, it is less than 10K km and 2/3 has gone. I mean the season is far from over and I already need a new one, not good. Cheap price is not everything.

Now that there is funny, I don't care who you are!!!

By the way, when your making jokes and talking goofy, it is considered proper to place at least a smiley of some sort or the word JOKE so that others that are less experienced don't think your serious.

Any ways, great post... And very funny!

I hear ya. I felt the same way and took my chances because of the price. They are GREAT tires on the road, on fire roads, and in the sand. I wish I could trust them too, but that crap on the interstate was scary. I'm not getting rid of my rear one until it throws a chunk or wears flat though.

FYI, I sent pictures and as much info as I had about order dates and distributor as I could to Shinko USA (sales division, I assume). I got a response from a gentleman named Scott that he was forwarding to Shinko in Korea. He was disappointed that a radial did this, and said this was the first report he had seen of it on a radial. Hopefully that's true. I'd sure like to run some more $50 tires in the future.

Put a set of Shinko 705 Radials on my Wee today. They handle a lot different than my old stock Wings but I am already getting used to them.

The Shinko's have to handle better than the stock tires on wet pavement as those things were worthless when the pavement is wet. Slid out into an intersection yesterday on the stock tires while trying to brake gently (plenty of tread left). Every time I tried to apply any brake the rear started skidding (kept off the front brake on wet pavement after my front tire washed out in a stop last month causing a low side). Went ahead and mounted the Shinko's today as I had them in the shop waiting for the stock tires to wear down some more. Just couldn't wait any longer after yesterday.

705 radials rule. Handling on twisty tarmac is exceptional. At least as good as the trailwings on dirt and gravel, but I am not an experienced dirt rider. If they hold up well, I doubt I will switch to another tire. I like the 011 Verges on my F800 also.

Just got back from Yellowstone. We put somewhere close to 3000 miles on in 5 1/2 days. Did some gravel and dirt getting into camp sites. Probably 60+ miles of dirt gravel, washboard, rocky stuff. The rest slab. This is my second set of 705's, the first were bias ply, these are the radials. They worked great. i'm getting more mileage out of the radials, but they are not as stable off road. My ride buddy is on a 1100 GS. He installed the shinko's just before we left. I like the shinko's everywhere, except in deep loose stuff, like gravel. They seem to be very unstable in that stuff. I thought it was the bike, as the big GS didn't do that on the same roads that the Wee did. Now that it is shod with shinko's, it does the same thing. They just seem to "wiggle" in deep loose stuff. And it's now confirmed, its the tires. Very unnerving.

I've put 4,000 miles on a set of Shinko 705 radials and absolutely love them. Their grip on dry or wet pavement is phenomenal. I've only had them on unpaved roads for about 50 miles or so, and I'm inexperienced in that stuff, so I won't offer an opinion in that regard.

I have about 50% tread left on my rear tire and at least 80% remaining on the front. I've run the original Trail Wings, two sets of Metzeler Tourances, and one set of Bridgestone Battle Wings ... for me and my kind of riding, the Shinkos are the best overall.

Pros:
- Very low cost-per-mile
- Outstanding pavement grip (wet or dry)
- Reasonably good off-road traction (compared to a 90/10 tire)

Cons:
- Noisy
- Less tread life than Metzelers

I bought mine from Motorcycle-Superstore.com, using a 10% discount and a special they had at the time, and paid $138 for the pair including shipping. That's less than a single Metzeler. When it's time to buy new tires, I'll buy Shinkos again and will get them from the same vendor.

To me they inspire less confidence than the stockers. I have the impression they are more slippery on wet surfaces, I could be wrong though. On dry surfaces they are good. I took them on some trails and they are fine. But I tend to be chicken and not ride too fast anyways.

As soon as I am done with the first and second rear tires that I have, probably in another 10k miles, I will try something else

#34 ·
You think they are slicker on wet surfaces? :yikes: I hope this is not the case. I just mounted 705's on my bike because the stock tires handled so bad on wet. As I recall, I had been hearing that they handled wet surfaces well.

My Shinko's kind of freaked me out when I first put them on. Fell into corners really fast then a little further into the corners I had to conciously countersteer. I got over it in a day or two and now really like them. Have about 300 miles or so on them now.
