Cool Hey! Is there anybody out there?

My daughter and I bought an '08 DL650. Lowered it an inch, and then while I was riding it, (the same day she was starting her endorsement class) the engine seized up. That was in May. It took us clear to August to finally get the engine swapped with a same year, less mileage one, and now the bike is rock solid.

In fact, so solid, that I'm planning on taking it around the country this summer. 11,000 miles and hitting all four corners of the U.S. I'm doing the whole thing solo, but folks can jump in and ride a leg or more with me. If you're game, I'm starting in Neah Bay, WA, riding to Lubec, ME, then to Key West, FL by way of Deals Gap, then to San Diego, CA and up to Roseburg, OR or a bit further.

Post up if you want to know more, or if you may have a yard to pitch a tent in. I just need tent space, parking for the Wee and access to a restroom. Thanks all

Gwen

The only blown Strom engine I can recall was due to a clogged oil jet leading to a broken cam chain.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014+ DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012+ DL650s
See http://www.stromtrooper.com/general-...nicknames.html

A suggestion, if you posted a map, even if it is a rough estimate, of your route you might get more folks offering a place to stay.

And...just curious if you are going to the actual four corner cities: San Ysidro, CA; Blaine, WA; Madawaska, ME; and Key West, FL ?
Either way that's a heck of a ride!

If you come through north of Boston let me know the time frame. I can put you and your bike up and help with any maintenance items that may be done. Then if time permits I'd like to ride up to Lubec with you, where you can be the first person in the USA to see the sun rise I proposed to my wife on Cadillac Mountain at 5am just as the sun rose... again, first person to see the sun rise in the USA Haven't been back there in 15 years and it's only a 5 hour ride away

We still have the old engine, and I have yet to do a autopsy on it. The bike was using oil fast enough, that when I checked it the day before, it had some, then it was gone. I have heard of them ingesting dirt and causing an issue with oil. I've also heard of bikes being tracked hard, and using oil like this. No visible smoke or leak. I'm not that mechanically inclined, so doing the swap was an adventure in and of itself. What I know is what I've read or managed to put together from bits and pieces, so any inaccuracies are mine.

I should tear into that engine at least to see if anything is salvageable. Otherwise, I have a lovely chunk of aluminum.

I looked at a map and came up with my own version. I guess I could have done more research to see what the "official" locations were. Sometimes though, it's more fun to make your own path. I have a map now, only I ran the trip through the north end, and now, I'm thinking it'll be the southern portion first. I don't like heat much.

Hi,

I think going the southern portion first, and then doing the northern portion later in the summer is the best way to do this run. Which would put me doing exactly what you suggest. I don't know about being the first person to see the sun rise. That sounds rather dangerous for a non-morning person like me. However, riding with a local through some of those major cities would be nice. At least someone to take down the info of the truck that runs me over.

Oh, and I found the ADVRider tent map. That is such a cool thing! I'm feeling much better about the logistics of this trip. That not knowing where to toss the pillow at night is more of a stress than you'd think. The whole point of the trip (other than my bucket list) is to advocate against sex trafficking and exploitation of minors. So, the less money I use on the trip, the more I can hand over to my charity (Door to Grace), when I get back. Free accommodations is good.

The traffic anywhere around Boston absolutely sucks. The best time to go through is early Saturday or Sunday morning. Forget about weekdays! Too many lunatics and the worst drivers I've ever seen ANYWHERE. I live closer to New Hampshire than Boston, thankfully!
