Howdy Bill! Don't rule out the Vee for long distance touring, just got back from a 600 mile trip up to Ohio on mine and it was great. Much better than my old touring cruiser, and a heck of a lot more fun. Granted 600 miles isn't a trip across the country, but I've done it numerous times before and this was actually enjoyable for a change! Cheers--BB

Default V-Strom as first bike?

When reading this thread initially I was going to suggest a XR650L like I have. Perhaps it'd be too tall out of the box, but they can be lowered and they're pretty good dual-sport bikes if one wants the balance to be about as middle of those two roads as they can be made. I personally feel the Honda's quite a bit more off-road capable than the KLR, the latest models especially. Certainly the KLR can be and I'm sure frequently is modified to improve off-road performance.

Thing in my mind was the weight when compared with a Wee. let alone a Vee. I, too, came from dirt-only experience and my XRL is my first road-legal bike. For me, it's been a great starter. I do probably tend to ride it a bit too much like a dirt bike when I'm riding around town though. At my age, maybe not too smart.

However, when I saw the post stating that a Wee's already in the household I considered there was no reason to post a note. Then I thought I might add one thing:

If this deal hasn't already been settled, why not let boyfriend get his 1000 and that way both can be ridden. I'd guess if the Wee's found too much it can be sold fairly well and something else chosen, so perhaps this offers a reasonable testing option.

Let us know what you get!

John

While I love the sound of engines, I really do believe noise is our main enemy....well, that and stupidity. Maybe stupidity's first. I'm well guilty.

Oh yeah, and don't forget, it's all good fun until someone loses an eye!
