What can i say but...
MAN!!!
Downset and I decided to hit Lytle Creek after these rains. Figured it be dried up enough but still tacky for traction with an occasional puddle or mud. Got to the top of Sierra Dr only to find the unpaved section closed. We decided to hit Cleghorn Road in San Bernardino. I've been wanting to explore that road for some time but never had anybody to go with. Glad I never tried it alone.

it started out innocently enough. nice tack, little dust. real good riding weather

but then.…we had to go here

after we’d already been here.

Might not look like much to you Noreasterners, but this is SoCal and we don’t even know what to do with rain.
Anyway, we got through that alright with some encouragement of a couple of bikes going the other way. Said they been through this and were heading back and this was the worst of it and was pretty much clear sailing the rest of the way. They hadn’t seen what we were on.

Was looking good.

And then…we had to start working our way down the other side.
Does this look like clear sailing?

I’d already been through, mostly made it. This next pic is a little further on down the trail.

Here’s a wider view

Scenery was nice. This is where we’re headed, Lake Silverwood.

Almost there…

There was one section on the way down where the entire off camber trail was slick mud for about coupla hunert feet. Our mode of operation from the first rock pile was to shut down and inch our way with the help of gravity sliding the back tire. We’d drop into a rut to make it easier to flat foot and walk them down. When we got to this mud section I found a rut, dropped in, and immediately saw my mistake. The rut veered to the right and off the side of the mountain. I motioned Mike through another line and when he was safely past he came back to drag my bike out of the two foot deep mud pit. Sorry, no pics of that one. Too danged beat to even think about taking one. Plus I had some nasty arm pump, proly woulda dropped the fone.

Four hours from A to C, kind of. We forked at B but google maps doesn’t recognize the trail from B to C. Just zoom in and follow it for yourself.

We did not take 138 until we were done and heading for home.
Wish i had a better map.

That was some serious fun Glenn. Great write-up too! Some of that ice had me thinking I wouldn't be making it though, can't stands the stuff. I think some more exploring might be in order once the trails have dried up a bit more, maybe with some extra help.

The Stroms definitely look a little out of place there, good for you getting 'em through.

You need to try to get through there in the 27 mins google says it should take.

shoulda seen the stares we got at trail head

That looked insane! I got tired just looking a those photos. I would have stuggled on some of that stuff on my old DRZ400.

Jim
it probably would have been super easy if we had taken the route on my google map link but not nearly as fun. i'm a glutton for punishment. once we got to a certain point we had no choice but to keep going. i don't think we would have made it going west. we did come across plenty of bypasses but didn't have a map so taking another route was just as unsure. we just rode. thank God we didn't have to tackle a ditch like that going up hill.

pelican. at one point we had to unload all that to get a good place to pull the pig out of its mud hole. but they do come in handy as slider. the ALTrider protection performed flawless. tuff stuff, reduce ground clearance but i'd have a totaled motor without it.
i pulled the sail off so i didn't have to look through it. plus i was worried about the decapitation affect if i had endoed.

Thanks for posting.

I live vicariously through the online lives of masochists.

I just had a beer to celebrate your safe return.

masochists: someone with a taste for suffering
:yikes:

that's the only part of the entire definition that i can identify with. so, thanks, i guess.

i just have to say, i got through some pretty gnarly stuff on basically street tires. can't say i was graceful but made it. very impressed with this bike. i wonder what those TKCs would do for your vicarious voyeurism.

agreed. a little stiffer suspension would help too. my forks were fully compressed coming down a couple of those trenches. there's not even a dent in my bash plate. i thought for sure at least one of those rocks that stopped me would have done some damage. nope.
