Default Cleveland to Nova Scotia, Aug 4-11, 2012

To celebrate both of us turning 50 this year, a friend and I took 8 days to ride from Cleveland to Nova Scotia, and back. We were grateful for all the information from other members that have made this trip before.

We blasted up there in two days, half of it on freeways to make time. It was worth it and we'll never forget some of the sights. The Cabot Trail was the highlight of the journey.

We took an extra day coming home and stayed off the freeways, and taking time to ride to the top of Mount Washington too.

It was a long trip, 3,400 miles total, and makes us appreciate that we're so close to West Virginia's great roads.

I have DL1000 and my friend has a BMW R1200R. We didn't have to think about them, which is a testament to their reliability and comfort.

Awesome photos. You should have picked me up on your way with a quick stop in Youngstown, Ohio. Thanks for sharing.

Good eye Barry, I was at that EXACT spot 9 days ago. Mt. Washington was awesome. That part of the US is so damn nice.

I would have moved to the coast of Maine 35 years ago if I could have figured out a way to make a living from there, but hell, it's only 300 miles and Halifax, NS is 750. Good reasons to ride for more than a day.

Oddly, I have NEVER ridden, (or driven), to the summit of Mt. Washington. I have always climbed it. An off the hip count would be 4 times.

The most memorable hike up Mt. Washington was, December 30, 1976.

Just a tad bit more of a challenge, at that time of the year, then riding, (or driving), up to the summit!

On the way up.

On the summit of Mt. Washington.

Beginning the descent.

(I still have that very same ice axe, the crampons that I wore that day, and those scary "red and black" checkered wool pants!)

Geezus BL, I thought RIDING to the top was something. Hiking up in the winter is a bit more of a challenge.

I felt the same after riding out to Meat Cove, only to find 5 BICYLIST'S already there.

First is the NS/NB border,(and believe it or not, someone sits in that lighthouse every day, all day, counting cars!) and the second is Peggy's Cove... 15 min from my house!

Looks like a stellar ride. It makes me really proud to hear the stories of how much people love our little corner of the globe. Come back again!

That is a great story about the bicyclists! Were they packed for an extended tour of the highlands, or were they just out for a day ride?

This reminds me of another story.......

The very first time that I rode my bike in Canada, I did so 36 years ago! And, I was on a bicycle too! I had been invited to have a week's stay at the camp of some friends of my parents. That camp was located on a shore of the lake that was only accessible by boat. I decided to ride my Schwinn Continental 10 speed back home to New Jersey from there. The distance was 540 miles, which I peddled in 6 days. Again, the year was 1976 and I was 18 years old. No cell phone. No GPS. Just a paper map and guess work! My very first solo ride! Sorry no photos of that trip. I can't seem to find where they are buried within my possessions.

To add to your memories of the Cape Breton part of your trip, you may want to watch the video below. I have shared it before, but you may have missed it.

Please read the information that is the caption underneath the video before you watch it. It will explain a few things.
