That is not a bad thought. But are you sure that works?

You can get decent stills from a GoPro but that is not what they are designed for and because they have such extreme wide angle lenses the stills are more fun factor than real.
If you want to record the trip you need an on board movie camera of some sort (GoPro is my suggestion) then a small p&s style camera for real photographs. Don't go the DSLR route they are just way to cumbersome in the long term. My suggestions for a p&s style camera would be the Panasonic LX5, Canon S100 or my favourite the Fuji X10.

for stills, I use a Kodak EasyShare I bought about 5 years ago, what I really like about it, it has an optical viewfinder instead of digital like almost all the new digital cameras, the batteries last forever, a pair of rechargable lithium AAs lasts me 4-5 months/1000+ pics before they need a recharge

One question that I want to know is how do you aim the Gopro as it has no viewfinder?
Also is it possible to external power any of the "helmet" cams?
Cheers brian

The gopro has an available LCD back that works as a viewfinder.
I have a contour. It doesn't even have the LCD back option. I aim the camera by eyeballing it. It mostly works.

Yeah, and it works GREAT when aiming the camera on the roadside in broad daylight!

(It doesn't even work from one side of my garage to the other.)

only with the Contour Roam & GPS, the Contour +, you can use an app on a cell phone as a view finder

that said, I've had good luck with my Roam just by eyeballing it, with 170° fieldd of view, its not hard to get your focus point somewhere near the middle

the laser aimer is really only to rotate the lens, it projects a line, not a dot

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm still a long way from making a decision about this. The helmet cam idea sounds neat. Just flip it on and let it record, but i don't want to just do video. Lack of a viewfinder means stills would be hit n miss, which is not good enough for me. I like to compose my pictures, with a nice frame and the details i want visible etc. Having it work through a smart phone is a neat idea, but then you have two devices to recharge all the time and there would be no quick shot capability etc.

I'm still leaning towards the SLR as i could use it when i am walking around the park long after the trip ends etc. A helmet cam is motorcycle only for the most part.

If i did go for SLR, then i might have a concern with weight and size. Most of the SLR cameras are fullsize and wouldn't sit on a handlebar very nicely. I wonder if a RAM mount could even hold one of these up on a bumpy road?
