Default Dirty Strom Air Filter Pics

Well let's see how this goes.

I can't imagine there's many air filter pics floating around on folks' hard drives, but if you happen to have a notable one, let's see it, and if you happen to be changing yours and you're like "holy hell, lookatthatthing," then take a pic of it for our viewing enjoyment. Add any details you please. Oh, and if you just came back from a trip to Baja on your XR650, then that sucker better have three live scorpions and a severely dehydrated Hispanic embedded in it, which is to say only Strom filters, please. Strom filters are something we can all relate to

So, here goes: This here was collected summer of 08' on my trip from Michigan to Colorado. The grasshopper was likely taken from Wyoming since the leading edge of m'boots were coated in grasshopper juice the day I passed through that state.

I oughta start taking pictures. I work at an oil change place and as part of our "service" (read - selling you shit) we check the air filter. You should hear some of the things I get from people when I show them air filters that look like that. The majority of the responses range from "OMG!!!" to "Wow that's bad go ahead and replace it" to "I know it needs it but I can't afford it today". However one in every 15 customers will look at one of those and say "It's fine, put it back" after I walked over to their door leaving a trail of dead bugs behind me. I really want to say, and I've heard my manager do this once, "No it's not fine, it needs to be replaced but if you don't want to do it now that fine, just don't lie to my face". I've seen airfilters I wouldn't use in a vacuum cleaner let alone any sort of engine, yes even that POS Briggs and Scrapiron from the 50s.

I've got others too, one guy came in with NO OIL in his engine. Pulled the plug, nothin came out. I'm guessing he thought the little oil light on the dash means change your oil. A few of our customers think it's ok to go 10000+ miles on dino oil. One time we pulled a cabin air filter and it was FULL of bird seed and mice droppings. My manager yanked the blower motor and we ended up with 3-4 pound of birdseed in the garbage can when we were done.

I digress, I will try and get a few pictures of the better ones that come in. I can't wait to start collecting bug on my Strom's AF, just gotta buy one first In the spring I hope.

This one's not severely occluded, but does have a nice insect collection: http://www.flyingjoke.org/motorcycle...rty-airbox.jpg

I cleaned it and ran it another 5000 miles.

Default Actually

Dunno about the sorta-fabric filter in the Vee, but most air filters work a little better when they have a certain amount of dirt/dust on the surface, as that acts as a prefilter. Of course, when the layer gets deep enough to start obstructing flow, then it is time for a cleaning or change. Generally the dirt does not migrate through the filter, so the need for change is a function of obstruction, not surface dirt. The presence of dead insects is interesting, but not germane to replacement issues. Which is good, because, for some reason, the Vee seems to collect plenty of bugs (at least mine does) perhaps due to the short snorkel and the air intake placement.

I zip-tied some screen over the intake snorkle so the big stuff doesn't get through any more....and I think it was a good thing during this service interval.

This really makes you realize why the edge's rubber seal is so important to have a proper seal inside of the airbox!
