Around Lake Superior

Some friends and I had a fantastic week riding around Lake Superior. Thankfully we only hit rain once, on the next to last day when we were heading back through Michigan.

Here are links to my Photoblog posts. I will work on getting a couple short videos up as well.

Cool. I want to do that during some summer. I have friends that just moved to a big house near Lake Superior by Marquette, MI. They love winter sports and kayaking. You can see the lake out their windows. They are buried in snow right now.

Did you camp? Were the bugs (black flies, mosquitos, and no-see-ums) bad went you went? The weather is hard on everything up there. I think I will stay in hotels.

I did the circle around Lake Michigan 3 years ago, then Lake Superior the next summer. Both had great spots, but in my opinion Lake Superior is...well, superior. Riding the north shore on a warm, sunny day, with granite cliffs above you on one side and the lake islands below you on the other made for one of the best rides I've ever done.

If it's a good day to wash the bike, it's a better day to ride the bike.

I did Lake Michigan by car including the Ludington Ferry which has since moved and Mackinac Island. It was a great trip. I would think Superior has more scenery. I know of a couple of folks who drown trying to kayak around Superior. I will stay on the cycles.

Great shots. Looks like an awesome trip.

I was on a Motorcycle trip to Lake Ontario a few years back. Lake Superior looks like the nicer ride

The Ludington Ferry used to operate from Milwaukee, WI across Lake Michigan to Ludington, MI and that is how we started our trip. I used to live in Hinsdale (suburb of Chicago). Now it operates from Manitowoc, WI to Ludington. Still a cool ride to make a part of a trip around Lake Michigan.

Glad you enjoyed the trip!

I did it in 2015, but my very first motorcycle trip was 5 days (+ 6 days travelling) solo camping at Lake Superior Provincial Park (on the eastern end). I love the scenery, but the weather can get interesting. My first trek up there was in early August, and the 3 day ride up was sunny and 25C, but on the second night it dropped to about 4C overnight and I was caught without warmer clothing and it didn't warm up above 15C until I was halfway home.

On the second trip in late August I got hit with 4 days straight of off & on rain as I rode along the north shore of lake Huron and into Michigan. Also the fog on the north shoreline between Grand Marais MN, and Marathon ON was very thick at times, and the morning dew was so thick that I had to pack a wet tent every single morning for the whole trip.

I love the northern shore, but the Keweenaw Peninsula was a nice surprise on the southern end, as well as a jaunt down Minnesota Hwy 1 @ Tettegouche State Park out to Ely.

I'm hoping to go the northern route again this Summer when I head out west to BC, here's hoping for some better weather this time

A bit of clarification on this. There are 2 ferries that run across Lake Michigan:
The Lake Express Hi-Speed Ferry runs from Milwaukee to Muskegon, MI
The SS Badger runs from Manitowoc, WI to Luddington, MI

As far as I know, at least as of last summer, both were in operation.

The thing a lot of people don't understand -- probably because we call them 'lakes' -- is that L. Superior and L. Michigan are in fact inland seas. As such, they generate their own micro-climates. It's not unusual to have beautiful weather inland, and run into rain/fog and a 20-degree temperature drop at the shore.

That being said, both of my trips around Superior and Michigan were blessed with phenomenal weather.

If it's a good day to wash the bike, it's a better day to ride the bike.
