BMW was the first to come out with a "beak" on the GS series. I guess everybody else just decided to follow suit with their own version of a "beak."
I guess adventure touring styling has taken over from the old dual sport moniker, since that term seems to now refer more to the more dirt oriented bikes like the KLR's, Drz's, etc. I think it's more of a styling statement that seems to have gained popularity lately. A lot of those bikes have no business going off road, but hey, it's cool to look like it.
