Default Tell me about the saddle sore 1000

One of my goals this year is to complete my first saddle sore 1000. I've been thinking about doing one for a while and I'd like to take a shot at it this spring once the clocks change. My reasons are pretty simple, I've ridden to most everything close to me, there is a lot of cool places to see within a thousand mile ride of my house, and finally because it's there...can I ride 1k miles in 24 hours...seems like a though thing to to.

So I'd like to hear from those of you that have already completed one. What was it like, did you go point to point, did you get off and take any pics? Did you stay on the freeway the entire time? Any advice?

Default SS1000

I rode my 2012 DL650 from the Olympic Peninsula to Sheridan Wyoming last Labor Day Weekend.
1045 miles.
I will NEVER do that again.
(Until the next time I do that again, that is).

Here's what was tough for me. When it started getting dark. The last two hours in the dark, after riding 850 miles, were really tough. I was not as on-my-game as I should have been. I tucked in behind a Corvette and followed taillights, hoping to be out of the splatter if he hit a deer.

Since I'm NEVER doing a SS1000 again, here is what I'm going to do the next time I do a SS1000. Start at midnight, ride on the summer solstice, and be done before it starts to get too dark. Oh, and maybe buy an FJR.

Stay hydrated. Get off the bike and do jumping jacks or some other kind of stretch about every 2 to 3 hours.

Good luck.

ive done 3 ss1000 and 1 bun burner gold I believe that's what its called. 1500 miles in 24 hours. I had a riding partner for all of them but my first ss1000.
It didn't take much to do really I had a goal and that was to get from point A to point B. For me it was leaving Georgetown ky and ending up in mustang Oklahoma.
It was an excellent day and I only stopped to fill up and snack (pb and J) I was a triumph sprint my first time out and really it wasn't too bad. Good night sleep leave super early 4am and just ride the hwys.

My second time out I went for the 1500 miles in 24 hours. The weather was awful and I was riding with a new HD ultra. He helped me push thru those dark hours of the night, they weren't so bad just when the sun came up and we wer rolling thru Denver Colorado that was the hard part for me. So much to look at and so tired. We ended up making it right on the dot at 24 hours and I will say never again.

Have a goal in mind and stick to it and if you can have someone with you it makes it a lot easier.

Default pamper the bottom

i've done several 900+ runs on two different bikes.

one an old fatboy, low to the ground, no windscreen, but a very comfy broken in corbin seat. the only time i got off was to gas up and have a smoke. never was i sore or tired.

The other an old goldwing 1500, all stock. this i had to get off every 100 miles to my bottom a rest. didn't ride again for days from the pain.

despite the superior touring ride of the goldwing, it utterly failed in the end, my back end that is.

make sure your seat suits.

This been discussed before and the Iron butt site has info. If your course is a straight one with a distant point as the destination, it's easy. Get on bike and ride until the motel is in sight. I used to ride from Los Angeles to Amarillo, 1100 miles, in a day. Start at 0400 and get there for a late dinner. That was at legal riding speeds too. About 200 mile intervals for fuel, gas and go.
It really simple on the interstate. On 2 lane roads, the rural routes, You'd be hard pressed to do it at legal speeds. Then you'd be looking out for "the man" and trying to avoid riding awards.
Weather conditions and your ability to be with yourself for extended periods will make or break the enjoyment of the trip.

I did one on a BMW K1200GT and it was still a challenge. If you have a riding partner, make sure you have the same thoughts regarding stops, etc... Ron wanted to stop every 45 minutes, fortunately, I was leading so I kinda forgot about that. My mistake was not doing any type of longer ride with him prior to this, so I didn't know how he planned on riding.

It is best to stay on the interstate and do a straight run there and back. You have to document every road you go on, so if you choose a route that has multiple roads, it will slow you down.

When I got home, I didn't want to look at my bike for 2 days. If you are going to do the SS1000, I would recommend the Bun Burner 1500 because you get an additional 12 hours to do 500 more miles. Plus, you knock out two rides with one, because you will get credit for the SS1000 as long as you complete the 1000 miles in 24hrs.

Stay hydrated and do some jumping jacks or something to get the blood flowing. Make sure you thoroughly read all the requirements so you won't be surprised.

If you do one, good luck and let us know how it goes. If you need any other info or would like someone to look at your proposed route, shoot me a PM and I would be more than happy to help out. I did that with a member on the BMW forum and his suggestions helped with my ride planning.

I did one in 05 on a concours. I did not think it was that hard, it is just time management. I left at 3:30am and got back at 8:30pm, which included a set down supper in Amarillo. Pick a interstate avoid big cities and it should work out fine.

I would say that it should be easier now with the speed limits being 75 in Texas and New Mexico now, west Texas it is now 80 in places.

I rode from altus ok to okc and then west on I-40 to Morarity NM and back. Again, key is time management and not doing stupid things. While fresh I filled up in OKC and rode non stop to near Amarillo and then next stop was in Santa Rosa NM. I picked a late June day for the long daylight hours. I did mine alone. It was fun. Remember this where I live a day ride can be 400 miles due to our location so I am used to riding a long way. Have fun

Ive been thinking a lot lately about riding to my mom's house in Michigan this spring, taking her out to dinner, sleeping, then coming home in a normal 48 hour weekend. The trip would be about 750 miles each way. I may amend the trip to add 250 more miles on the way there and do a 1000 mile ride. I have been exploring the Iron butt website for the last hour or so and I think I will join the "tour of honor" as well. Thanks for bringing this up.
