Default Looking for a travelling V-Strom/Motorcycle mechanic

Instead of going to a dealer, who charges a lot and I highly doubt his quality, I prefer to have a professional motorcycle mechanic with v-strom experience, do the service. Maybe at my home/garage, or maybe pick it up and return it serviced.

If anybody can make recommendations of such a professional, that would be great.

I'm serious, this is not a joke.
Why can't I hire a guy like I hire other professionals that perform services for me? (e.g. change the window)

Thanks.
Looking for somebody that either lives in NJ (near my town), or at least can make it here.

you're welcome

just thought i'd hi-jack your thread for the folks down here where we can still ride to a shop

after a bit of reflection, i realized how important it must be for you folks to find a wrench who will DRIVE to your place to work on a 2-WHEELER

good luck on your quest

Hey Bigman,

Gotta say that I can give a solid endorsement to the service department at the Pompton Lakes dealer. My wife (sv650) and me (DL1000) skip local florida service and have our major work done by them. My wife is a high mileage rider who put 94,000 miles on her 2006 SV650 and has 75,000 on her 2008. The folks at Pompton Lakes might be pricey, but they are excellent. They have picked up stuff that was fixin to go bad, a good thing because we spend some time in the middle of nowhere. Bob the service manager had (or still has) a DL1000. Our daughter lives next door to you in Glen Rock so we ride up often during the summer. Contrary to your experience with the folks at Ramsey, we crossed them off our list some years back. Just sayin.

If you go over there, tell Bob the little lady with the SV650 from Florida sent you.

There was a traveling mechanic that went to BMW rallies outd West with a 5th wheel trailer outfitted as his shop. A very competent fellow.
He eventually gave the life on the road as too difficult.
I hope you'd be willing to pay the premium a home mechanic would deserve for the service at your residence...like the plumber, they's ain't cheap.

I've mentioned this before, but when I had a KLR I attended a couple of "tech days" where owners got together to work on their bikes and share expertise. You might try posting in your regional forum here (or CL?) to see if you can organize and/or host one.

Too bad you're not near Indy.. man, I'm bored about now.

There's a troublesome gray area when you get good enough at mechanicking to make money, but it's still technically a hobby.

I've done lots of wrenching for local riders, and I could do a lot more, but the murky situation surrounding liability makes accepting money for work a lot more difficult than it should be. With anyone who's not a close friend, it's a real balancing act -- if I install these tires for $50 and this guy biffs it on the way home, am I going to end up on the wrong end of a lawsuit even if it wasn't my fault?

Normally, I ask that the owner help out so that he shares the responsibility, and can see firsthand that the work is high-quality. Many people are eager to learn, so this usually works out well.

I'm also somewhat reluctant to accept money directly. I might trade a lunch or two, or high-quality adult beverages (although my fridge is now jam-packed with excellent beers I haven't had time to drink). Or, we trade for a tool I need, or professional services.

Some people carry monkeys in their trunk so why not a mechanic?
